My Poor Baby

Tucker- he never gets a break.

He started out with a liver shunt and now we're on to allergies or something. gosh. about a month ago he had to go get prednisone because he had some awful spots where he had scratched so bad he got an infection. and all was well, he healed quickly but the vet gave him prednisone for 1 month because he chews himself a lot and licks eeeeverything.

and now he has the most watery eyes!! we are almost out of prednisone and we are all trying to decide whether we should try to get a refill or not for him. do you all know anything about prednisone and if it will be okay to keep him on it? we are going to have to make a visit to our vet soon to talk about having liver shunt surgery for him anyway and i would like to be more educated on it before we go and it is mentioned. i would hate to cause him more issues with more medication than necessary.

all the info and tips are greatly appreciated!!

I have read on here from another poster that it is not good to have them on prednisone that long. I dont know my dog is on it for allergies too and its the only thing giving him any relief. It seems like your vet would know what is good for him to take though since he knows he is going to have the surgery.

I am not too familiar with Prednisone so sorry I can't offer you any information on this. I do hope though Tucker begins to feel better soon.

I don't know about "side effects" in animals taking Prednisone ... but I can tell you first hand what improper use will do to humans. An idiot [who called himself a doctor] gave it to my Mom for two years straight for asthma. Long term use, it seems, affects your bones and she had compression fractures in her back and was in a brace for 6 months & required round the clock care!! She is now in the latter stages of COPD and cannot walk!

I know the drug properly administered for short periods of time is great for some symptoms, but please be very careful and question your vet about it's long term use. I hope little Tucker will be feeling better soon! We will keep him in our prayers. Please keep us updated!

what a sweet boy!!! I think that prednisone is a steriod that is sometimes given during allergy troubles to help stop the boys reaction to the allergin. Like his scratching, etc. I think that there is something that he can take full time, to help keep the allergies under control. Kind of like how we take meds for allergies, prescriptions etc. As far as the steroid (prednisone). It is not something that you should have him on for more than a temporary basis. I hope that this can be of some help.. Best advise, talk to the doc.

I just checked online to see if I could find any info for you. A pharmacist said her Yorkie was on prednisone but she knew not to continue it for a long period of time and has her dog get allergy shots. She said it took a few times to take affect but that it did work. That isn't exactly word for word but you get the gist of it. Why don't you ask your vet the pros and cons of allergy shots? A read several pieces and "hot spots" were mentioned several times. Also, are you making sure to feed kibble with no corn in it?

How terribley devestating!!!!!! That just makes me sick. I am so sorry that you family had to experience this.

Poor 'Tucker" I had my dear ol' 'ROSIE' on Prednisilone December 2005 (Just gone) as she broke out in some form of allergy I never foundout the cause and I am happy the one course cleared it all up! Now she has to wait until her hair grows back she is getting a bit old now and will be ten in May. But She is still my Bestest Chum! I love her to bits even bald!

BettyAnne is SO RIGHT !

My husband is very ill and on prednizone - it has awful side effects and they usually advise you to administer it in "Spurts" ...but NOT TO JUST stop taking it - You have to gradually step down in dosage as it can cause convulstions and shock if stopped abruptly.

Please talk to your vet about how to wean him off these drugs - they're a wonder drug... but have lots of bad side effects ...and I don't know about the reactions on Dogs - but I would be very careful with this and ask your doctor FIRST how to stop them......

Poor baby - I hope they've helped him and I'm sorry he's going thru so much
