Hello all,

I've had my wee Bug for about a week and she's anywhere from 3-4 months old. For the past 3 days while I was at work I put her in the bathroom behind a gate. She's the type the cries and barks at first, but every time I came home she was quiet.

So today. I came home and it's quiet but that's not unusual. But then I turn and Bug is in the hallway. Not in the bathroom behind the gate, roaming free. But the gate is still firmly in place.

As best I can figure my 5 inch tall puppy scaled a 25 inch tall gate. That would be like me jumping a 26 foot fence.

Has this happened to any of you? I did NOT expect this.

They are crafty little buggers. When Huey was a tiny pup, he was able to get into a 20 inch high laundry bucket and retrieve panties from the bottom without ever getting stuck!

I have a climber. I've gone through every kind of baby gate imaginable - even the extra tall ones with verticle bars only. He's managed to figure out a way to get over all of them. I've caught him in the act a few times & although he's tiny, it's pretty amazing how strong he is! Not to mention soooo cute

I eventually decided to let him roam. He's potty trained now & it breaks my heart seeing him get all worked up trying to climb the gates.

yes I have mine in a crate with a top. She still managed one morning to get her crate door open and was happily shredding paper towels when I went in to say good morning..

Yes, my little Gigi climbs. When I first got her I had a pen for her, she climbed right out of that. Then tried double height gates in the bathroom. Didn't stop her either. So I gave up and let her roam, didn't want her to hurt herself since I would have had to put gates up to the ceiling!!!

I have Gates, but they're solid, and slide back along the wall to allow foot access. I only use them when I have a Puppy, like now. I have Adult Dogs as well, and want them to have total access, be able to look out of the upstairs windows, and alarm if there's someone approaching.

The way I allow the Adults movement while restricting Puppy's, is have Boxes on either side of the barrier, which are tall enough for the Adults to jump up on and cross, but the Puppy can't. By the time a Puppy is big enough to jump and cross, he's housebroken.

I've had my pup since 10 weeks old, and she's a climber too. Bought a playpen, went to dinner and she was free in the house when we got home. Got baby gates, same thing happened while we were away. So she's always been a free bird. Very strong headed, and determined little girl. But you gotta love them anyway!!!

Now that she knows she can climb over, it won't stop. I would worry about the jump to the other side of the gate. I've had families that came home to broken bones from jumping off the top of the gate.

Yep our 5 month Yorkie is a climber/jumper. I turned my back on him for 30 seconds to find him on the kitchen work top the other day. He has also jumped in the bath when I've been having a shower!

Yes...that's what scared me & why I decided to just get rid of the gates. I'd much rather come home & find pee on the floor than a pup with a broken leg.

Thanks everyone,

I've definitely been concerned about her breaking something so I switched to crating her when I'm out. Thankfully she's taken *wonderfully* to this and it has not been a problem at all. No barking or whining, she just settles in and gets comfortable. I feel much better now.

I'm glad to heat she's has taken to the crate. Also, when confining them in a bathroom make sure the toilet seat is down. If they can climb/jump they can fall in there. We had someone on here that lost a puppy that way.

Our 13 week old puppy Titus climbed over his metal octagon ex-pen. My husband put him in there while he was washing his car and came back inside to get something and saw Titus greeting him at the door lol I'm not sure what to do now since he's not potty trained I dont want him roaming the house freely but I dont see any other option other than putting him in his crate. I dont really want to do that because I dont want to confine him in his crate unless its bedtime. What to do what to do..... any suggestions will be gratefully received
