Buddy has some very dry, flaky skin where the hair is going back in from a hot spot above his tail on his lower back/flank area. The hair also feels very course. He has no visible flaky skin any place else on his body. I can't find any visible dander on the rest of his body- Not even a flake. The rest of his hair is also very soft and shiny.

Is their anything I can try topically to moisturize his skin there- Coconut oil maybe?

He is already in a number of oral supplements including Vit E and Fish oil so his actual diet is not lacking.

He could not have gotten the area sun burned because I put doggie sunscreen on the area is he going to have extended sun exposure like for a walk, hiking, playing outside, etc. He has not been swimming at all since the spot developed either.

I am not sure about how well this will work but have you thought about using the shampoo Minksheen? It states it helps hot spots plus has the mink oil in it to help skin and coat. MinkSheen Pet Shampoo from Touch of Mink. Just a thought.

I am by no means an activist, however, if a mink had to be killed to allow me to use that product, I might consider finding some other alternatives. Please do not take any offense, as none was intended.

Coconut oil would be good to apply there topically...have you had a vet check it out?

I agree with this. Not to mention that I cannot stand MinkSheen for a bunch of reasons.

OP - it sounds like the hot spot skin is not resolved. I would so warm compresses to the area a couple of times a day to promote blood flow and thus healing to the site.

There's doggie sunscreen??? Where do you find that at? If you would please let me now---that would be great!!! My lil boy Toby loves the outdoors! I try adding a little bit of my sunscreen.

Vet already treated the hot spot a week prior to the original post. The spot is not bothering Buddy at all. It bothers me

Yes they make doggie sunscreen. Buy.com - 8 oz. Dog Sun Block Spray

Vet has previously said to use it for extended sun exposures.

For Hairless dog and hairless cat owners it is a must- High risk of skin cancer.

The hot spot is resolved. Absolutely no redness or irritation. No drainage. Nothing except dry, flaky skin- I think he just shedding the old damaged skin. This hot spot was a biggy (size of a dinner plate) by the end. First vet visit he was only gave oral steroid even though I said he needed injection of steroid and antihistamine. I then had a really hot, humid, rainy days. My parents and brother wish the dogs when I go to work 7p-7a but I am gone from 6a to at least 8am. I had told them they needed to make sure to blow him especially his hot spot if he got wet. Also he needed his fan turned on at all times. He rolled in poop that was in the wet grass and they did not smell it and left him wet overnight because they thought I was over reacting about him needed to be blow dried due to the existing hot spot- Needless to say it looked horrible when I got home and it was infected. They also turned off his fan. Another vet trip- he got the injection of steroids and antihistamine to get rid of the itch so that he would spot rolling in things due to the itch factor. I then had to wash the area twice a daily then blow dry it (dog force dryer not a human blow dryer) and apply an RX topical treatment for a week. Then back to the vet for a follow up. The spot is definitely not an active hot spot just dry, flaky skin.

Various types of baths may help to alleviate your dog's flaky skin. Oatmeal baths are one of the most popular and most effective in soothing irritated skin, especially in the winter when the flakiness is caused by dry skin. However, you shouldn't bathe your dog more often than once every two weeks unless your dog's veterinarian instructs you otherwise. Giving your dog too many baths will strip the skin of its natural oils and cause it to dry out even more.

My little man had very dry flaky skin....I changed his food and give baths with oatmeal shampoo now....after his second oatmeal bath his skin and coat look great

I now treating the affected spot with Bag Balm on the at night and Sulfodene 3 x daily- So the area is getting a good rubdown/ massage 4x/day on average. The spot is much better than it was

. Plus Buddy loves the extra TLC

My 14 Weeks old also seems to have flaky skin, its not spots or anything like that but its all over his back. It doesn't look bad right now but it looks more like dandruff.
Does anyone know what i can do to cure it,
