Hello

I was wondering which food everyone was feeding their yorkies. The vet told me to feed him royal canin. Is this ok or are there better foods? I also need a food that would be good for my maltese.

There are certainly better foods out there than Royal Canin, but there are also foods out there that are worse than Royal Canin.

I'm currently using Blue Buffalo Wilderness for my girl. I rotate between the 3 flavors that they offer (chicken, duck & salmon) just to change things up a bit since she sometimes gets bored with her food.

I used to rotate between Evo, Orijen & Acana as well. Evo was part of the company Natura who was just bought out by Proctor & Gamble (makers of Iams & Eukanuba) so I wouldn't trust that food anymore. Orijen & Acana are excellent foods as well, but sometimes they're difficult to find.

I'm sure many other members will respond on here & give you some input. Food is definitely a popular topic on here.

I prefer Life's Abundance. All natural human grade ingredients and NOTHING bad

Its also an all life stages food so I can feed it to my puppies and my adults.

They LOVE it

I use Wellness Puppy and I'll switch to Wellness small breed when they're old enough. I used Royal Canin at first, but I found out that it has a lot of fillers in it and my babies were always hungry. Wellness has been a better choice for me.

Can't say enough good things about it.

I also like Orijen (made by the same company), Fromm, Nature's Variety, Wellness.

I drive over an hour and a half each way to get Acana.

I have used it now for probably 6 months exclusively and have had wonderful results. Harley loves it! I used to just free feed him, but once he switched over to Acana I had to actually start dividing his daily meals because he would eat an entire days worth at once!

I've been wondering the same thing since I read the dog food thread.
Sadly, I'm in Mexico City and can't find those brands you recommend here, just Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Purina, Pedigree, Perfect Fit, Sams' Members Mark, Cesar, Sportsmans Choice and the one we are feeding her since we got her Science Diet Small Bites (puppy).
So this is my question:
Which one of these is the "less worse"/ best option?

I feed Bridget (or I should say "Bridget will eat") Holistic Select Small Breed/Mini Puppy food. I'm sure there is better, and worse - but this is what worked for us, and I was going broke trying to get her to eat what I thought she should eat. I tried everything on the "Free Sample" list (this list is great by the way...Nearly everyone sent samples - some sent several, and some sent coupons). This was the only kibble she liked. I have a hard time getting it around here too - it has to be special ordered. 6# bag runs around $22.00 + $8.00 for shipping. Everyone told me I'd love this breed....no one told me she'd be cheap!!!!

I feed mine Ultra Hostic food its got all kinds of good things for them. I also cook lean meats. its for small breeds. I get it at Petsmart.
they also have treats for them.

Royal Canin is ok; but there is better IMO. I suggest grain-free kibble and would recommend Orijen, Acana, and Natures Variety Instinct. Any of those would be great for a Maltese as well.

Whatever your dogs likes and what works for you is the best food choice.

I use Royal Canin (Indoor Puppy 27) because that is what the breeder had Copper on when I got him. I am pretty happy with it. He likes it, looks healthy, and is gaining weight. All good things for a puppy!

I did talk to a rep for Blue Buffalo in Petco one day. I was impressed with what she had to say. If I switch, that will be what I try next.

All of the pups in my house (yorkie, chihuahua, and a small mixed breed) eat Blue Buffalo and are doing well on it - if I had to switch, I would go to Wellness Super 5 Mix.

Acana!

This has been such a successful food! We've been using it since October-ish with amazing results. They've also both done well on Wellness. You can order a HUGE sample pack from Luke's and then if you don't live by a store you can order through there or another online store. If your order a large bag the shipping (even though expensive) won't matter too much because it will last so long. Good luck on the food hunt. I think this is something all yorkie owners go though lol

Acana is def on the top of our list
