Question about AKC and pedigree

Ok. when I got my yorkie they told me that his mom and dad were akc registered but I opted not to get the papers because they charged more. Since then, I have lost all contact with the breeder and she has moved. I don't even remember her last name. Well, the AKC now has a program where they will somehow test your dog to see if it was from AKC lineage and if it was, they will register it with no papers if you send it a 3 generation pedigree. The problem is I have no idea how I am supposed to find out his pedigree. He is only going to weigh 3 lbs if that full grown and I would really like to stud him out. I can register him with CKC but that's not that great. Anyone have any advice???

Didn't the breeder give you the AKC registration when you purchased your puppy?

So now you are attempting to register the dog but you didn't pay the breeder for the papers?

Being 3 pounds is really not a very good reason to stud him out .

I think you may be confusing registries or perhaps confusing the AKC's policy with Conditional Registration -- that is for dogs that have been AKC registered and then found to have a problem with DNA testing, in other words DNA testig proved the parentage listed on original papers is incorrect, but that they are full blooded yorkies. They give them a conditional registration and then they have to come up with a 3 generation pedigree.

There are other registries that require not much more than two people saying they are yorkies and maybe some pictures. But those registries are not worth the paper and ink it took to make them. They are really just a scam on the prospective buyer to make them think the dogs are documented as pure-bred.

I have a question though .... you have another thread here that says you did not get a health guarantee on this little 2 1/2 pound yorkie male because you were the breeder. Confusing.......

The Only way to register with AKC once you have lost his breeder information and not registered or not having the information to fully register you can do Only a Listing Privilege, which allows you to only participate in their acrivities, excluding confirmation.
Check out this link: American Kennel Club - Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privilege for more information. I have not heard from AKC the program you mentioned. You may have things confussed with another registry.
You would also have to prove that he is neutered to do this. You would not be able to use him for breeding. And at his size why would you, not to mention he might not even have the qualities to be breeding him.

You would have to get litter registration papers from the breeder to do this. I could not find anywhere in AKC site what you spoke about.

I am confused, too. Is this the same dog you are considering breeding to your female poodle to make Yorkiepoo's? Why does AKC registration even matter?

Actually AKC does have some sort of program now that allows you to attempt to 'prove' your dogs purebred lineage and get them AKC registered. It is expensive and time consuming, and is probably not worth it because I imagine they rarely honor it. I will have to find the link.

Many breeders say this, and what it usually means is that they didn't have the rights to breed, one or both of their dogs. A breeder registers a whole litter for around $25.00, if the offspring are eligible, and since you can sell an AKC dog for way more than an unregistered dog, it's well worth the $25.00. However, not all dogs have breeding rights, and their offspring aren't eligible for registration. So the breeders misled consumers by telling them the parents were registered, and they will register the dog, but it will cost you more, everyone always says, "never mind". If the breeder had rights he would have registered the dogs when the litter was born. Unless the parents were registered and had breeding rights, puppies cannot be registered. It's not the cost of registration that makes breeders forgo registration; it's the eligibility requirements. It would be very unlikely you would be able to find any information without the breeders name, and while the AKC has various registries, some only apply if you want to enter your dogs into various agility shows, they aren't not meant for registering your dog so that they will be able to produce offspring that is eligible for registration. Dogs registered in these alternative registries must be neutered. I agree that the CKC is not that good, and believe it is essentially worthless, since they will register any dog. It's just meant to mislead consumers into thinking they got something valuable because their dog is registered, but anyone can start up a registry, and not all registries are created equal.

Thanks BlueSkies -- I had not read that before. But it seems like they have already disqualified most situations. I can't think of what situation it would apply to. Here are the disquals:

So, this OP could nt use this option since she never got papers from the breeder when she bought the dog. I am glad they have the list for disqualification. I was concerned on first glance that they might be registering dogs previously from other registries.

The AKC does have a new program where they will research the pedigree of a dog that is registered with another registry. Basically, what the AKC is doing is trying to get breeders back from the ACA, APRI, etc. A lot of breeders went to the other registries because they are a little cheaper and easier to deal with (you don't have to do DNA testing on males, etc). Please don't freak out on me, it's true. The AKC isn't that expensive to register a litter, but the ACA is only $10 for a litter. So, a lot of people who don't show went to the other regestries just because of that.

For a dog with papers from a non-AKC accepted domestic registry
AKC has a new program where we are researching pedigrees of dogs that do not have AKC paperwork to determine if the dog comes from AKC registrable stock.
In order to determine AKC registration eligibility, you will need to send AKC a copy of your dog’s pedigree, registration application and/or registration certificate from another registry. You can also submit documentation provided by the breeder such as a contract or bill of sale. The dog may qualify for registration if the pedigree shows no break in AKC lineage and the dogs in the pedigree originate from AKC registrable stock.
Should the dog be deemed registrable, AKC staff will register the dog in question for $30. All late fees will be waived.

They are. IF the dogs come from AKC registerable stock. We had them do research on some of our dogs (registered with both the ACA and the APRI when we bought them). They did come from AKC registerable stock, and so they are now registered with the AKC. Thier parents were not registered with the AKC, but their grandparents were.

Were their parents eligible for registration? I mean many breeders are buying AKC dogs with limited registration, meaning the offspring isn't eligible for registration. They go ahead a register with one of the alternative registries, and produce offspring, and I just want to make sure that they dogs and the offspring they produce won't ever be allowed to register.
