| ![]() I took the girls for their annual physicals and shots today. Bad news is, Holly has bilateral LP, looks to be grade 1 on the right and grade 2 on the left. I was aware of the possible diagnosis when I took her for her first vet visit right after I got her. She is not favoring either leg so we will watch and wait and see how she does. Gracie's bilateral LP surgery was a success. Both knees have healed well with no luxation. Her left knee has some crunching in it, which the vet thinks may be some early arthritis. So both girls are now on a glucosamine supplement, kitty dose. I gave the vet the article that was circulating here a short while ago about the flea control meds. She will review and get back to me with her opinions. She said in glancing that the only two mentioned in the article that she would recommend are Frontline and Advantage. I'll let you all know what she says.

| ![]() sorry to hear that Holly is dealing with some LP. Glad to hear that Gracie's doing so well after her surgery. It sounds like you have an attentive vet. I'm not sure about the article you are referring to. I spent a bunch of time away from YT in the last few mths, so I must have missed it. But you have me wondering.

| ![]() Hopefully Holly won't need surgery for her LP's. I agree with your vet. I wouldn't use anything but Advantage or Frontline on a toy breed dog. |

| ![]() Hopefully this doesn't sound like a dumb question but what is LP and what does it mean to have bilateral LP? I'm trying to learn as much as I can from this site. I'm not really too familiar with the health/physical subjects and problems that can occur with yorkies so I'm learning a lot from these threads. Regardless, it's good to hear that Gracie's doing well and hopefully Holly won't need surgery as well. |

Sorry to hear about Holly... hopefully the LP will stay at a low grade. But, good news with Gracie!!! It will be 1 year for Shelby next month.. I hope that she gets as good a report as Gracie did! ![]() (I am also curious as to what your vet says about Frontline.) Hope that you are doing well and having a Happy New Year!!!

The condition is usually first detected in 6-12 month old puppies and the condition can worsen over time from a mild and only occasionally popping patella to a chronically luxated patella that cannot be put back into the femoral groove anymore. This is called a Grade 4 medial patellar luxation. What does the Surgery entail? The repair consists of several steps, in which the kneecap is put back in to the groove, the groove is deepened and the surrounding soft tissues and bone are also altered to secure the patella within the groove. Sometime the tibial crest (front section of the shin bone) is transposed to a slightly different location and secured with tiny pins. Most dogs return to full use of the limb very quickly.
