I'm starting to get worried about Bella

She started out by making a single snorting sound around the 26th or so of Dec. and this morning it was lots and lots or snorting all in a row! I have read about reverse sneezing and even watched a video a YT'er made awhile back of it, but this just doesn't seem like that. For one thing, she started out with only one snort and that was it. It has gotten worse (as far as how long it lasts and how many times a day) since then, but it still isn't as if she is snorting around all day or anything. Yesterday, she probably only did it 3 or 4 times, the bulk of which was last night just before bed. She was in the bathroom with me and started doing it and I got her to stop. Then, she went into the kitchen where my boyfriend was making her dinner and started it up again. Usually if you hold her and speak calmly to her she stops. I say usually.....it's only been more than one or 2 snorts in a row yesterday and today. When I wake up Bella is excited to give me morning kisses and wiggles and wiggles, and this morning she started snorting even worse when she did it than she was snorting last night.

Let me describe it a little better. It sounds like if you were to have drainage and would snort to get rid of it. Also, even when she's not snorting, but she's excited I can sometimes here a rattley sound in her nose like she has snot maybe?? And when she sneezes (probably 3-4 times per day since the 26th of Dec) it's a wet sneeze. I gave her Benadryl Sat. and Sun. to see if she was having some allergy problems, but it hasn't helped at all. I just don't know......

I made an appt. for Wed to see the vet and see what she thinks, but I wondered if anyone else has an idea. Her little nose is still cold and wet, so I don't think she has a fever, and she acts like she feels good. Also, it usually happens when she's excited, BUT it doesn't happen EVERYtime she gets excited.....maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the times she's excited....she's an excited little girl!! (Leaving the room and coming back is grounds for excited wiggly kisses!

) My dad's dog has reverse sneezing whenever he's excited, but it just doesn't seem like the same thing. And, I thought that if it were reverse sneezing it would happen every time she got all worked up or was running around a lot??? Plus, it just sounds like she's congested to me...

Another thing to note is that she never did this before Xmas (except when she was tiny and would dunk her nose in the water bowl by accident). I stayed for 1 wk at my aunt's in the country for Xmas, and my aunt has a 4 mo. old Yorkie puppy that would snort the entire time she was running around playing with Bella. The puppy's snort didn't really sound like reverse sneezing to me either....it had more of wheeze to it than I remember with reverse sneezing...but my aunt took her to a vet who said that was what it was. Bella didn't start until after we got home after being around the puppy for a week, and I'm just worried she may have caught something....a cold? Or if maybe this is a congestion issue? Or has anything to do with the air being drier? I have a cool mist humidifier, though......

Anyone have any idea???

It can be so tough to get an answer for sure when it comes to reverse sneezing (RS). How old is Bella again? Usually if they have RS, it starts sometime within the first 1-1.5 years, but it can start later too. Wylie kind of outgrew it.

Marcel does it (ever since his neuter, where I think they damaged his trachea) and it has no real pattern in terms of activity. Sometimes, it sounds just like a normal RS episode. Other times, it sounds "wet" - and those are the scarier events, for him and me both. It's those times where I wonder if he's headed toward CT. But not sure.

To me, her episodes do rather sound like RS - but the runny nose is kind of concerning. I think this happens to Marcel during the bad ones too though - and I think all of the pressure in the upper area causes fluid to push up and out the nose. I always make him kiss me to break up the event.

Since Bella's issues did just start after associating w/ another "snorting" dog, it does make me wonder if she caught something. Hopefully, the vet can easily rule this out. Another thing to think about is whether you've introduced any new chemicals or foods - sometimes allergies can make the events more frequent. I always keep an eye on pollen.com to see if his episodes are related to particulates too.

I know how you feel - RS is so scary to watch and I just hate it. I do hope it is just a cold and that your Bella is feeling better soon! HUGS.

) The slightly runny nose she has is in between "episodes" rather than just after one, which makes it even weirder! Also, she has NEVER stopped what she's doing to struggle to breathe or anything like that...she's literally snorting as she's running and wiggling! I still don't think it RS simply because it doesn't really seem to bother her at all and that along with the wet sneezes and dribbles I very occasionally see around her nose AND the fact that I hear other nasally noises when she's not snorting. I had a noon appointment with the vet today and she said that she can't rule out RS (especially since she didn't do it while we were there), but that she also thinks it would be less likely to be RS taking into account the other factors. She "prescribed" making her stay in the bathroom with me during my shower, a cool mist humidifier in the living room, and one in the bedroom next to the bed too. (I have one, but it's in the hall out of convenience, so I'll be picking up another one today and repositioning the one I have.) We'll see! She said that the dry air may be messing with her nose and causing this, but that she would be hesitant prescribing anything (which I don't want anyway unless she REALLY needs it!) since she isn't running a fever and obviously feels good. So, maybe that will solve it all!!

Lol - Marcel is the *same* way, just keeps on runnin' in the midst of his RS - I think it's me who is more freaked out than him (unless it's a realllly bad one).

I hope the humidifiers do the trick for her - we have our paws crossed for ya!

Well, all the humidifier by the bed seems to have done is make me and her both cold at night!! (Boy has she been snuggling into me!) She sounds just as stuffy as she did before we tried it, if not a little worse. And man, are her sneezes wet! She probably only gets a snorting fit once or twice a day right now, but she sneezes intermittantly throughout the day (and it's not in connection with the heater turning on, or anything like that) and I can here congestion in her breathing when she's playing even when it doesn't turn into snorting (it sounds like nose congestion, not lungs congestion, though, thank goodness!) Anyway, I have been stuffy and congested too, so maybe it's just something in the air. I'm still not convinced it's RS, mostly because of the other breathing noises I hear and because of the persistently wet sneezes. She still plays when there's an opportunity to play, but she spends more quiet time on my lap than before, it seems like to me, so I don't know if she's feeling a tad "off" or not??? I know she doesn't have a fever, though, so I guess even if it is a little cold or something, she isn't reeeeallly sick or anything. I guess we'll just keep an eye on her, but hopefully this will eventually go away!

As I was doing a search on 'stuffy nose' I came upon this thread. My little Orion who is 8 months old has this 'stuff nose/congested' symptoms as well. It definitely does not sound like reverse sneezing. The noise he makes sounds like he's trying to clear his nose but he's all congested. He's had this now for the last few weeks. I think it started right around Spring time. He doesn't do it all the time, probably a few times a day and it only last a 3-5 seconds.

In any case, I was just wondering if you have any update on Bella. I'm going to bring Orion to the vet sometime next week for his rabies shot and will ask the vet about it.

Actually, I do have an update! Back when I posted this, Bella was doing it daily (maybe 3 or 4 times a day). She still does it bow, but it's pretty infrequently.....like maybe once every week or 2 (or more).
Also, she did it once when we were at the vet. The vet tech was with us when she did it and said, "My dog reverse sneezes just like this too!", so apparently it is reverse sneezing.....just not quite so loud/dramatic as the videos I've seen. I guess we're lucky that her little "episodes" are very mild in comparison! And like I said, it's very rare that she does it. I think hers is really just some combination of allergens, dryness, and excitement.
Good luck with Orion.....I hope he just has a mild "case" of the reverse sneezes too!

Thanks for the update!

Orion is fine except when he makes that sniffling noise. I'm always feeling his nose to make sure that he's okay. In any case, I'll just have the vet check him out again when I bring him in this coming week for his rabies shot. This is his last shot and then he'll be fully vaccinated....FINALLY!!!!

My two year old yorkie has been congested since may. We thought it was seasonal allergies but he has not gotten better. I have been to the vet several times. He had a chest xray and it was clear. They gave put him on an antibiotic, a steroid and a bronchodialator. Nothing has worked. It is way worse in the Morning. He struggles to breathe especially when he has a toy in his mouth. Now.. They want to do a scope of his mouth. Which means he will be put under anaesthetic. Can anyone help?

I believe some dogs just get congested. I had a shih tuz and and maltese and they both where congested there whole life and at first I use to go crazy trying to figure out why. One vet told me that water or food sometimes backs up into the nasal passage and causes irritation and then congestion. So I don't think it is really anything to worry about. I worked at a vet and dogs would come in all the time with congestion and the owners would tell me that they where like that there whole life Now sammie gets congested.
