My furbaby is now recovering from a nasty yeast infection in both of her ears. The vet gave us a prescription ear cleaner along with antibiotic drops that she will receive for 10 days. The vet showed me how to properly clean her ears and told me to clean them again on Friday. I'm a little nervous about cleaning them...the vet made it look so easy. The vet squirted the solution in the ear and smooshed a piece of a cotton cloth deep into the ear and removed it several times. She kept repeating the procedure until the cotton was clean.

My question is what kind of cotton cloth should I use? I don't want to use something that will leave cotton fibers in her ears. The vet had something that looked like a medical type piece of cotton like a 2X2, but I don't have those at home. Do I just use a kleenex wipe? It needs to be something that I can get pretty deep in to the canal as to remove the yeast build up. What do you use at home?

We're doing it right now.

The vet said that I could use a paper towel - which I really like better than cotton because of the fibers like you said. Our vet said not to go that deep and that as the drops and antibiotics work, the infection/icky stuff will eventually come to the top. I don't really go into the canal. I just wipe out the wide opening to the canal.

She is on her 5th day of ear treatment and I'm starting to see some brownish gunk come to the top of the ear canal. I think I'm going to attempt to clean them today.

Paper towel sounds like a good bet. The key is to get that gunk, but also to really absorb any moisture, bc yeast/candida LOVES moisture - and that's where it starts to overgrow - so just keep it nice and dry in there, as best you can. Hope both your babies are on the mend!!

gauze squares really work much better then paper towels IMO. I buy cotton balls also and use them
