I was wondering what the guidline was for proper weightgain in a newborn yorkie. I have a day old yorkie that weighed 3.5 oz at birth and today weighs 4 oz.!!

she/he will pack on more weight than if they had litter mates...the gain will be more since she is the only on at the teats...it will begin to taper as you wean at about 6-7 weeks...

Thanks for the info. Last night the pup was on one of Lily's teats and was sucking and crying! I think that it wasn't getting as much milk at that time. I didn't intervene at all. Lily just layed there! At least she was laying still though. Eventually the pup changed teats and was content! Isn't it supply and demand, just like humans? Also, if the pup only sucks out of a few of the teats will the others dry up?

It sounds like you said the puppy had drained the milk and needed to change teats to get what it wanted. I have a girl that had 2 pups but we lost one. The puppy only liked the bottom teats at moms belly so the others pretty much dried up. A little milk would come from them but they wouldn't fill up like the 2 the puppy nursed from. Good luck with your new baby!!

My little Holly only likes the bottom teats also. I do put her on two of the other teats that have been full. Holly is now 6 days old and weighs close to 6oz! She started out at 3.5 oz.

Yes, it is supply and demand just like humans. The main thing you would have to watch out for as the other teats dry up is mastitis... just like humans. Puppies grow at different rates. Sounds like your's is doing well!
