I want to get a whelping heating pad for a friend/co-worker as a doggie puppy shower gift. The female is due in mid-Jan 2008. What brand would any of you recommend? And why?

I dont know a brand off hand, but I just use the kind you get at Walmart. I usually get a good one and not the cheapest and they have to be UL, etc. I just wrap it in a towel so the dog is not directly on it an only put it in half of the box so if they are too hot, they can get off of it. I do not let her whelp on it, it is for after its all done and they are settled. I do like the ones with 3 heat settings.

gee I was just asking this in another thread, where she has a cold baby. I do use a heating pad wrapped up, but was not sure if it was a popular way of doing this. pooh's mum

Was that the thread that I thought the mom of the pups was cold? A great way to warm up a cold pup is to put the pup in your bra. Your body heat warms the pup up slowly and your movement helps keep the pup warm also.

I also just use the good ones from walmart but also watch cause some of them now have an auto shut off on them and will shut off after like 15 min u dont wnat that one lol that sure would be awful trying to get up every 15 min and turn it back on

Besides the auto-shut-off (we had to purchase from our local drugstore to find one that doesn't shut off) you also want to make sure that mom/puppies don't have access to the cord. Since these are not made for this, there is no protection around the cord, so they can chew on it or get wrapped in it.

So there is not on brand used most often. My co-worker is breeding malteses. I just thought it would be a good idea since it is getting into the cooler months and she live in a 200 year old house which can be cool. She had breed before and I am just looking to be nice. Thanks

i normally use a heating lamp. everyone has their own favorite but when i used the heating pad, some of the puppies will wiggle themselves off of it and become cold. i would have to watch them carefully and keep placing them back. and no....they weren't too hot. they are very mobile. the heating lamp is placed high to cover the whole area and i keep a temp gauge in the whelping box so i always know what the temp is.

there are regl heating pads from walmart mentioned. As a breeder, I use one from walmart but Here's one I could appreciate. You can also control the temp better (instead of low med high). It's more expensive however.
