i normally use a heating lamp. everyone has their own favorite but when i used the heating pad, some of the puppies will wiggle themselves off of it and become cold. i would have to watch them carefully and keep placing them back. and no....they weren't too hot. they are very mobile. the heating lamp is placed high to cover the whole area and i keep a temp gauge in the whelping box so i always know what the temp is.
