Pigs are the sixth most intelligent animal in the world and no one blinks an eye about eating them. I'll probably get flamed for this but whatever. I don't eat animals period.

Furthermore, read this part "The ban was lifted quietly in this year’s agriculture spending bill. The Senate, breaking with the past five years of agriculture bills, did not include language on continuing the ban in their version of the bill. They attributed their decision to the GAO report, according to a Senate Appropriations Committee spokesman "The House, as in previous years, did include the language to continue the ban. When lawmakers reconciled the two bills, the ban was not included," in other words when writing the bill the members of the house and senate PURPOSELY did not include the part about horse banning so as to allow the ban to expire, which Obama signed. The blame needs to be placed on more than one person here, try your Representatives as well.

in my humble opinion,ALL, and I mean ALL,politicians are somewhat corrupt, But I KNOW mr. Obama has minions of people working on this things,if they can find something that a another politician said decades ago, and this goes to ANY president, to use in a political campaingn, someone should it told him and he should it sent it back to the house and the congress to be fix, anyway the road finishes at the PRESIDENT'S desk, so ultimate HE is responsible for what he signs..
I am an indepedent voter and I see the fault with Both parties...

the thing about eating a horse is. i would think that the meat would be terribly tough and not at all tender due to the fact that your horses are the work houses on a farm. they are built for muscle and strength to carry and pull and be ridden. their muscles are tough and strong so the meat would be too.

i've heard farmers say they try not to make a cow run or startle it and just let it be lazy and fat because the meat is tender that way and the muscle won't get as tough. why would anyone want to eat a tough ol' leather piece of horse meat? wouldn't it make more sense to just keep using horses for travel and pulling and carrying loads like always?

it's just gross to think about to me. and i've tried just about every legal edible meat i can try, but this is where i just draw the line. not into horses or cats or dogs. YUCK some things we just shouldn't be eating i think.

and i've always hated Obama. why not add more to my list of reason he's a complete idiot and horrible president.

I think this is absolutely disgusting.

Btw, pigs were mentioned above. I don't, or at least very rarely, eat meat that comes from a pig. I could never go vegetarian (and to be honest -- chickens are so stupid, that it doesn't bother me as much to eat them. Is that terrible? Oh well). But pigs... I just can't get myself. They are SO smart, and cute, and the cruelty that goes on is terrible. I pretty much eat some ham on Thanksgiving and Christmas and that's it. I eat turkey bacon, etc.

I've tried to become more aware about where my food comes from in general. I'm not an expert shopper yet, but I try to purchase from companies who are well respected and have good reputations. But yeah, I am still learning. It sickens me what is done to a lot of these animals in general.

Dogs and cats are treated like this in China. It's terribly disgusting. Horses are peoples pets, horse people can be as crazy as dog people sometimes, lol.

It just makes no sense why this was a needed or necessary thing. Obama is going to lose alot of support from animal rights groups for this.

I WISH popular opinion would hold a little more clout with him instead of having him do whatever he wants at every turn! I know we are a Republic and not a true democracy but I WISH we were more democratic in nature -- where the majority would rule on most things! At least we could act like a real Republic and have our leaders truly represent the PEOPLE who sent them to Washington! That was the idea -- have them act on OUR wishes!

Makes you wonder if cats and dogs are next, doesn't it? Horses are such intelligent creatures! They will show loyalty and devotion just like our dogs! They are NOT a livestock creation! What a shame this was slipped in during a Thanksgiving weekend!

Horror from eating beautiful horses aside .... I can't see how he could say we now have the funds to do the inspections. There was a special on not long ago where the FDA was explaining they had WAY TOO FEW inspectors to inspect the meat we eat NOW! They were saying it is a wonder more horrible things weren't happening as they did not inspect nearly enough. I can't remember but it was a VERY SMALL percentage of the meat we eat is actually inspected. It is hit or miss! So, now we can stretch them even thinner -- the inspectors not the horses.

I wonder why Obama doesn't have better things to do? So sickening. My local news had an article about horses in Presidio, Texas (I think) not too long ago about horses being not treated well. They were sick, skinny and suffering. They were there as a hold area waiting for somebody to come pick them up to transport them to Mexico to be slaughtered. Even if the horse slaughter is illegal here, horses would have been sent to Mexico to be killed. I live in El Paso and have been to Juarez, Mexico almost all of my life, even my family and I lived there for about a year, I saw how animals were treated there and its just horrible. Too few people cared to help them. I remember several times when my mother took her dachshund to the vet clinic, I saw sad yet drugged dogs with their legs tied up. I asked the vet why the dogs legs were tied up and they said to keep them from running around because they did not have enough crate to put them in. The clinic was really small. Anyway, with time running out, the petition hasn't met 25,000 signatures. I posted it on my Facebook. I hope they will help to get the numbers going but knowing them, they probably won't. :/ Thanks for the link.

I'm not even going to start with my opinion. Because it'll become a laundry list of things that I don't like about our dear President.

With that being said, what an idiot.

This is my opinion, as I've stated before. I'm happy the legalized it. Maybe we will be able to stop exporting these poor horses to Canada and Mexico where they spend DAYS on livestock semi's with little to no food and water. Then they are forced into small pens where they are packed so tightly they can barely move, for DAYS until its their turn to cross the border. I do believe that the US slaughter needs regulation and needs to be a bit more humane, but I'd rather it be done in the US than sending them out of country.

I find it funny that people sit there and say "Oh how could someone eat the pretty horses." Have you ever thought of how cute a lamb is or what about a baby calf? Ever heard of lamb shanks and veal? Yup those are cute animals but people don't bat an eye to scarf them right down.

It is a neccessary part of life. Without the slaughter houses open, many horses live miserable lives and often die due to neglect.

I eat all kinds of meat, but would never touch horse meat. Simply because of the medications we give over a lifetime to our horses.

This is my two cents and yes I am a horse owner. I have 4 incredible horses who I love very much.

I think it's important to look at the "whys" of any bill, and there is a lot of evidence to suggest that because we couldn't control them from being shipped to Mexico and then slaughtered, it was more humane to have them slaughtered here, where at least the slaughtering would have been done under specific guidelines. I know lots of people hate Obama, and this gives them one more reason, but I think I would have made the same decision he made.

By the way, don't know if it's true or not, but I read PETA supports the bill.

PETA said:

Quote:
No one wants to see any horse killed for meat or to turn a fast buck, and PETA has always had concerns about the suspension of US slaughter, since it meant more suffering for these sensitive animals, not less. What we feared would happen did: Rather than have a change of heart and stop killing horses, greedy ranchers who deal in horse flesh simply jammed their “commodities” into tractor trailers and hauled the frightened animals hundreds of miles to Canada and Mexico – a journey most did not have to face before – to terrifying deaths in slaughterhouses there PETA Approves Of Horse Slaughter?? | TeddyHilton.com

makes me sad and sick. Why did he even find this necessary among all the crisis our country is in you would think horse slaughtering would be the furthest thing from his mind...shows you where his priorities are

I know some horse owners who are for this. Due to the economy many horses are being starved/abandon to starve after the family leaves the home. Or dumped in other people's corrals in the night. They go to be with 3 horses and wake up with 10. All because the owners can no longer afford them and/or their home.

The question still remains. What should we do with all the horses that run wild on BLM land and don't have enough resources to support them. Should we go ahead and let the starve to death?

We have a wild mustang rescue in our area of PA. They take in starving wild mustangs (horses of any kind, really) and rehabilitate them/find homes for them. I am not sure how many of these rescues exist across the country, but it would pose a better solution than slaughtering for human consumption I would think.
