Smile Emotional Support Animal

I hope this is in the right spot!
I've been doing some research online to have my pup become an ESA. I see a lot of "pay $80 for a certificate" scams. On Wikipedia it said you need a letter from your therapist, which I have gotten. It made no mention if what to do after that. Help?

Here is some information. You don't need to spend $80 but you do need to understand the difference between an ESA and a Service dog. If you want the pup to fly on an airplane with you be sure to check airlines for what they require, all are not the same.

There are 2 things you can get with an ESA dog and appropriate letter from your doctor/therapist.

One, the dog can fly with you for free in the cabin.

Two, if you live in an apt complex that charges a fee for having a dog, you can get that fee waived. Also, if you have an apt complex that doesn't allow dogs, you can get an exemption from that restriction and have your dog in that apt complex.

As previously said, you need to check with the airlines on what they require in the letter and how often you have to get a new letter (they are generally good for 1 year with the airlines.)

Good luck!

depending on your state...some recognize ESA dogs other only recognize service dogs....service dogs must be individually trained to perform at least 2 tasks or type of work. I researched this before choosing my new puppy as in wisconsin ESA is not allowed but service dogs are.

ESA can accompany you on an airplane and be able to live in your residence. That being said the animal's behavior must be appropriate and obedience training is usually called for so the animal will never be challenged for not behaving.

Poor behavior will always be a problem. Keep the letter from your therapist/psychiatrist. There is no certification, but the letter is important.

Ummm, just to clarify there is no number to the tasks a service dog must perform. Maybe they are referring to the only two questions a handler can be asked: is the dog a service animal that performs specific tasks related to the handlers disability and what specified tasks does the dog perform. They may not ask what the handlers disability may be.

Any disruptive dog may be asked to vacate a premise.

Hope this helps.

I just recently went through this with my yorkie.

The ADA does not recognize ESA's, only certified service animals.

The Fair Housing Act does recognize ESA's like a service animal.

As for registering your ESA, it's not required. There are several places that do that. I can see the benefit, if you take your dog somewhere and someone asks questions. From my understanding though, if they ask, you're just suppose to tell them you have an ESA and that's it. They can't ask any further unless your dog has a behavior problem and then you will be asked to leave.

I spoke with my therapist about designating Maximus as my ESA. I suffer from anxiety and depression, and that is what I see a therapist for. I recently went through a bad breakup with an ex which sent my lifelong anxiety through the roof, and another part of what made it so bad was the ex was keeping the dog. Max was his dog, but I took care of all the responsibilities for him from the time my ex got him. I became very attached to the dog, and was very anxious and stressed about losing him and about his care since he had recently had the FHO surgery on his right rear leg.

After a 3 month fight over paying the surgery bills, my ex offered me Max if I paid the bills. The problem was that I had just signed a lease on an apartment that did not allow dogs. I was so happy to have the opportunity to have my dog back, but devastated that I couldn't take my dog with me.

Friends in the mental health field encouraged me to talk with my therapist, since she knew how much the dog meant to me and how by having him it would help significantly with treating my condition. I felt uncomfortable about it at first, because I didn't want it to look like I was cheating the system, but after speaking with my therapist she told me about ESA's and that yes she felt that Max would be an excellent ESA for me.

She wrote a letter and I spoke with my landlord. My landlord had concerns about "yappy dogs" and barking, but I assured her that wouldn't be a problem since I would be putting him in daycare at least 3 days a week. She did tell me that I need to work with the neighbors in my building about any noise concerns. I am vigilant about that because I don't want any reason for her to say Max is too noisy and make me rehome him... that wouldn't happen anyway, I would just move. My apartment is right next to the main door of the building, so when anyone comes or goes he lets me know. Especially in the middle of the night... :/ So far, it hasn't been a problem.

Loki is an ESA and has been since day one. While the only things allowed under law are on airlines and housing, I have found that there are many more places that I can take him. He goes to every drs' visit with me, he has come to the hospital when I've needed an MRI. He gets to go to restaurants with outdoor seating and the only store he is not allowed in is a grocery store due to open food in the bakery and pre-made sections.

All you have to do is call wherever you are going and ask if they allow ESAs. A lot of places - Walmart, Home Depot - even allow pet dogs.

Very informative article! However despite the article I urge everyone with an ESA dog or for that matter a service animal to make sure they are good dog citizens in public! No excessive barking, snarling, out of control behaviour on leash - just a calm and in control dog out in public.

Gems is correct. Much is expected of a service animal and ESA! The behavior must be exemplary! There is no such thing as a registry but it is a good idea if you are traveling or living in public housing to have a letter from your doctor.
And.. remember if you are going out of the US the laws are different in other countries.

Default Clover Hill let me down

Hi everyone, I am new here. I am about to get a yorkie baby to be my new best friend and give me lots of loving! I just got approved for an emotional support animal and I was looking for a baby girl. I reached out and put in an application with Clover Hill Yorkies for a possible puppy in the spring. Susan Dodge from Clover Hill promptly saw my application and went out of her way to email me. She informed me that she had no puppies expected until spring, but basically that she would never sell one of her puppies to anyone who "claims" to need an emotional support dog and that it was a con. I was extremely shocked and insulted! I couldn't believe she could judge me so quickly for no reason! It showed me her true mentality and how she must truly feel about all our VETERANS with PTSD and anyone else who she may not relate to. Very disappointed

First of all I am so sorry that happened to you danger 617 am sure there is a little girl yorkie waiting to be with you, to be pamper'd and spoiled and tons of TLC. Welcome to this great site YT.

My JayCee is ESA wherever I go, she goes. Never had any problem in flying. Each flight she is right with me. I got a letter from my physician, Maxwell2405 was right on about info she gave you. I will be getting a new letter in couple months, however in this state I now reside, I have been advised the letter be from a phychitrist for emotional support animal, shall do. JayCee has flown quite a few times across country all I have to say is wanna fly, she's all ready. I talked to a lady on training for a service dog requirement, I will be looking into that myself.

I don't know what it means to be approved to have an emotional support animal...unless you are talking about the letter that a doctor can write so you can take you pet places with you. That is very different from needing a trained service animal. I think that was posted above.

I can only say what we do in rescue. We do our best to place pups in situations that will suit them...they are always our first consideration. If a home is good for them, then the adopters will also be happy.

I cannot speak for the breeder except to say that she has a right to sell her puppies to whoever she pleases; and, I would hope when she said no to you it was because she was looking out for the welfare of her puppies. I personally look for people to adopt to who are looking to care for a pup, not the other way around. Not that I don't think it is wonderful for a pup to be support for someone....but, the pup should always come first. I don't know what all of this has to do with her feelings towards our veterans and PTSD.....there are trained animals for that purpose. If you are a vet with PTSD, I would encourage you to try to get one that is trained. Yorkies are terriers and not all of them want to be put in bags and traveled with.....getting a puppy that you want something from could backfire. I urge you to look at older pups from perhaps a rescue that thoroughly evaluates their pups....OR if you qualify for a service dog, maybe one of them??
