| If your puppy was with its momma until at least 10 to 12 weeks, it should want its area it sleeps and eats in to be clean. If that's the case, don't put the pads in the crate. Put the pads somewhere nearby, but away from the crate and the food and water dish. As offered by Ladyjane, here's the housebreaking bible (very good info on how to indoor potty train and where to put the pads: Indoor Potty Training - Papers, Pee Pads, Turf Pads, Litter Boxes and more - Free Dog Training Tips from The Housebreaking Bible

| Thank you for the info , I had my pups since they were 12 wks , I have them in small room during the day and at night in same room but in crate with crate door shut . In the crate I have 1/2 bed 1/2 peepad . They do go on pad at night and during day the go on pad outside crate . But if I let them out of room they use pad and floor at times . They are going to be 6 months April 6 . I never crate trained before .when do you think they can hold it all night . I would like to take pad out of crate and use just for sleeping at night . Thank you again !!! |

How large is your crate? How many pups do you have? Because you previously had the pee pads inside the crate, there's a possibility they might be confused at first, but stick to it and be consistent. Don't punish them when they don't get it; instead, reward them when they do. To do that, you need to watch when they use the pee pad and consistently reward them with your excitement or with treats each time. It's best if you have a feeding schedule too, so they develop a routine that you can keep track of. Keep the pee pad in the same location in the small room at all times. Note that once you've trained them and they understand, they may still have accidents up to 1 to 2 years. Again, I would refer to the link and read more about it yourself. It's quite informative.
