Orphaned puppies PLEASE HELP Hello all, I havent posted in a while due to computer problems. That is the least of my worries though! Last Friday March 3rd we were out in the yard and Shelbie was attacked by a fox that had gotten over our 6 foot privacy fence. We have a wood pile on the outside of the fence and we think it went over there. We were right there and we couldnt get to her fast enough. I rushed her to the Vet and she passed away there. We are devastated and sickened by this and I still cannot get the image out of my mind. Some of you may not agree with this but Hubby killed the fox! We took it with us to the Vet incase he wanted to send it off for rabies tests. He didnt send it off he said that Foxes are known to be predators like this. Well as you all know Shelbie has delivered puppies on Feb 10th. The puppies are not yet a month old and the Vet gave me milk replacer. Well I have set and cried at every feeding. This is sooo frustrating. I have bought ever nipple known to man and have finally found one that works pretty well. My question is what kind of puppy mush can I make for them? The Vet wasnt worth a darn at helping me there. They are fat and looking good but they dont have any teeth yet that I can feel. They are pooping and peeing on their own without any help from me Yeah! I have been taking what is left over in their bottles and putting it in a bowl and offering it but they just fall in it or dunk their whole head in and about choke. They went to the Vet yesterday and he said they look really good and to not worry so much but it's really hard not to. Any and all advise is greatly appreciated!! Migualla

| I am so sorry, how painful for you and your husband. This thread might help you and there probably are more if you use the Search button on YT and type in puppy mush. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ght=puppy+mush

OMG, I cannot imagine your sorrow. I will pray that your heart starts healing soon. As for your babies-they are past the age where they need to be bottle fed. They can be started on gruel or mush or whatever some want to call it. Here is what I do--I use Royal Canine Baby kibble (it is new and I used the puppy food before that)..I put it in a plastic bag and beat it with a hammer to make a really coarse meal. I use Pedigree canned lamb and rice puppy food, a little formula and some yogurt or cottage cheese. Make the mixture soupy and make sure you feed them with really warm food. Start by sticking the tip of your finger in the food and then into their mouth. They will soon learn to eat from a baby spoon OR set the flat plate of food on something that will raise it about an inch off the floor. They do less walking thru it that way and can eat it easier. I stick the plate on the chin of each baby and let them get the smell of the food. IF they are not eating as much as you think, and BTW, they might eat only a teaspoon 3-4 times a day, add some NurtiStat to the mix. You can make the mixture thin enough to syringe feed them if needed.. If you would like to chat let me know and I will PM my phone number to you....I hope this has been of help to you but I will be willing to help any other way I can...give those fat tummies little respberries from Rini's cuties...

Get some puppy dog food and add warm water to it. It will soften it and the puppies are old enough to eat it now. You may also want to add the milk replacer to it. They love it if you warm it up a little. Good luck and good job on killing the fox.

I want to thank you all for posting! I have also posted this in the breeders forum. Rini, Please pm me your phone if you dont mind. You dont know how much that means to me. Everyone here is so nice and helpful. I am sure my husband will appreciate you all also. He is so sick of me sitting in the middle of the floor crying while feeding these babies. He is understanding but seriously I feel so alone with them. I am so scared to give them mush due to the fact there is NO teeth in there. I understand making it soft but are they really able to swallow it? I am a registered nurse but give me sick people any day! These puppies are so helpless. I have not left the house with the exception of Fri afternoon with Shelbie at the Vet and then again yesterday with them to the Vet. Again, THANK YOU all for the advise so far and I am hoping there is more to come!! Migualla
