| Josey's puppies Josey had her four puppies Saturday and three are doing wonderful. They are real little piggies! However, one of the little girls is so tiny. She was born at 1 1/2 ounce and is now 1 3/4 ounces. She tries to nurse but she tires out quickly so we supplement her with puppy replacement milk. Last evening she actually nursed for about 20 minutes while I held her to her mama. Her sucking is just so weak compared to the others so I am not sure how much milk she is really getting. She does drink well from her little bottle - we made a good sized opening in the nipple and she swallows what comes out. Her palate is fine but sometimes milk does come out of her nose - I think she may be really full when that happens. I give her about 1 cc at a time. Sometimes I think she is going to pull through and sometimes I don't have much hope. I just wish she would gain some more weight. She has stayed the same for two days. She hasn't lost but she doesn't gain either. From all the threads I have read on here, it seems that most of these weak little ones don't make it. I'm prepared for that -but I'm going to do everything I can to help her make it. |

| I've just been through this. I let my little one suck it out of an eye dropper and it never came back out his nose. You will have to put the baby to mom every hour and a half or 2 hours, during the night also. If she doesn't nurse long you'll have to supplement. If I can be of any help pm me. BTW my little guy is finally 15 ounces , he did not latch on well until he was 22 days old, so it can be done, you' ll lose alot of sleep but it's worth it! |

| Thanks Janet for the encouragement. I so want her to make it. She does nurse for a little bit - she seems stronger and more willing to try during the daytime - at night she seems pretty lethargic. I have been feeding her every 2 1/2 hours. Thank God for my sweet husband - he does his share with her too. |

Here is the link to when this happened to my little guy. If you're really bored sometime, check it out. I had a ton of help through it from YT. I think it is the only way I stayed sane, to talk about it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96035 You just really have to make sure she gets some food every 2 hrs. Best of luck too you, and like I said pm me if you need help or just to talk. Don't give up, I know it's tiring but you can do it. BTW, we named him Chance. also, to keep him warm I carried him around in my cleavage and used a heating pad in the box at night. Hope this helps you. | Janet I just read the whole thing this afternoon. What a great story and I am so glad little Chance came through. What a perfect little name! I will keep doing all that I can for this sweet little girl. Is it possible to feed her too much? I let her nurse for as long as she will and then I give her some with the bottle. I have no idea how much she is getting while nursing and I'm worried that she may get too much and cause it to backflow into her lungs. We are going to the vet this afternoon - I'm hoping he will show us how to tube feed. Thanks again for your help and encouragement - it is much appreciated! |

| Sonya - I do keep her on a heating pad under her crate all the time. I am constantly watching her to make sure she stays warm. |

| I gave Chance 1cc per ounce that he weighed. I was going to tube feed and my vet told me that there is still a chance of aspiration so we just stuck with what worked for us. Don't feed her on her back and be sure to burp her. I'll be keeping you and your little sweetie in my prayers. Forgot to say you need to weigh her everyday, you probably knew that though. | I'm so sad to report that our little girl puppy passed away last night. She was a fighter - but the odds were against her. The vet gave us the tubing materials and we tube fed her every two hours. Previously she had been sucking and nursing but yesterday she became very lethargic. Her breathing became very labored and heavy. I was praying she would go quickly because I could not stand to see her suffer. We fed her at 10:00 last nite, 1cc of puppy replacer with pedialyte. I also gave her 3 drops of the beef liver broth as posted in the breeder forum. She actually gained a little strength and lifted her head a few times. At 10:30 I checked on her and she was snuggled next to mama with her two tiny little front legs wrapped around her mama's right front paw. It was a precious sight. I got up at 12:30 to feed her and she had passed away. Our hearts are very heavy today but we have the peace of knowing we did everything possible for her. She just wasn't meant to make it. We are blessed to have three others who are thriving. I will now turn my full attention to them and enjoy watching them grow. Dog breeding isn't for sissies. These experiences hurt to a depth that is surprising. I have been breeding for 8 years and I have been very blessed to not experience this very often. This is only the second time I have lost a living puppy and I have had one stillborn. I love doing it - it brings me much joy as well. But times like this make me sit back and wonder how much longer. . . I want to thank all of you who shared advice and encouragment. This forum has so much good information and support - I appreciate it all from the bottom of my heart. |
