Default Puppy or Adult Female Yorkie Wanted

Hi everyone. I am new to the boards. I currently do not own a Yorkie, but am looking to adopt one. I want a female. She can be a puppy or an adult, but preferably not over age 5. She would be a pet, not a breeder. MINOR health issues are not necessarily a problem. Both myself and my husband are former vet techs. We currently have a 4.5 yo male neutered Golden Retriever, an 11.5 yo male neutered Golden Retriever mix, and a 6.5 pound spayed female kitty. My husband really likes the Yorkies and finally talked me into one. We want a pretty small girl that we can take with us everywhere. Oh, and we are in northeast Florida. I am willing to drive 2-3 hours one way to get her. Thank you!

What is the status? Did she get one of your babies?!

Nope, still looking. But as I told Audrey, I am not looking to spend a lot "purchasing" a puppy. I want to adopt one from a rescue, or maybe get an older dog from a breeder. Although I would love to have her little pup!

There is a Yorkie girl on Petfinder named Hope, in Marietta, GA. I emailed the rescue about her but have not heard a response and it has been several days.

It oftentimes is quite hard to adopt off Petfinder. They are super strict about who they will adopt out to. Don't give up your search! Have you looked in the newspaper classifieds? If you are willing to drive to Alabama, I can look around for you. What is your price range?

I really do not want to spend more than $300, which is why I was thinking I would have to adopt from a rescue. The little girl on Petfinder I was looking at needs some surgery ASAP, but I am still good friends with the vet I used to work for, so that would not be an issue. I know most puppies are around $1000, more or less, and that just isn't in the budget at the moment.

Would you travel to Alabama to pick up a yorkie? If so, I will be happy to look around for you and send you info on what I come up with. Just let me know.

Does it matter what size the yorkie will be? My parents and grandparents both got their yorkies for $300. But they weigh 12 lbs and 10 lbs. If you don't mind a larger yorkie, then you might be in luck! Just let me know!

Alabama's a little far for me. I can go up to 3 hours one way, and I'm coming from Jacksonville. As for the size, we really want a smaller Yorkie, definitely under 10 pounds, but the smaller better. We want to be able to take her everywhere. It would be awesome if she were small enough to ride in a big handbag if necessary.

Honestly, the smaller a yorkie is, the more it is going to cost. That is just how most breeders work. Supply and demand. EVERYONE wants a really small yorkie, thus the prices are higher. If I were you and I were on this kind of budget, I would not limit myself to a yorkie under 10 lbs. Both my parents and my grandparents' yorkies (10 lbs and 12 lbs) are both small enough to ride in a handbag. AND they both go anywhere AND everywhere that their owners go! Also, being a on budget, the smaller yorkies are far more likely to have health issues to deal with than a larger yorkie. Especially if this dog is more for your hubby, I would definately get a bigger one. They are more fun to wrestle around with on the floor. Oftentimes the smaller ones are nervous and never want to play because everything is so much bigger than they are.

These are just some suggestions. Yorkies are such a great breed. You will be in love with any one you get, whether it is 3 lbs or 15 lbs! But in all honesty, you will be more likely to find a bigger yorkie in your price range than a smaller one.

Yes, I know, tiny size=big price. That's why I'm looking more at the rescues. I just haven't seen any on Petfinder in my area. I was hoping someone on here might know of some.

I live in jacksonville florida and just had 6 yorkies this afternoon. wasnt what i expected...but they are all adorable. She had 2 females and 4 males. So if you are still looking then I'll be willing to work with you on your price range. So long as you get her the shots needed..and if you could help me find a vet for my other little ones. I just moved here from NJ. let me know what you think. good luck!

Oh my gosh, I am so happy to hear this! I would love to see them. I would really love to have a little girl. Can you send me a private message about the parents and when the pups will be ready and such?

If budget is an issue, I'd check the cost of typical vet charges for your area. If you are looking into a rescue they might need some follow up vet care and that could cost quite a bit. Same, if not more so, for a newborn puppy.

It can run into the hundreds.

Many breeder charge 1k+ (our next litter will run 2k each) but they include all shots, guaranteed and come with everything a new owner would need in their puppy pack. If there is a problem (which we have never had due to proper breeding) we will cover associated vet bills up to the cost of the puppy within the first year. Just something to keep in mind.............

Default Quality is worth the initial cost

I agree with Terrance. The quality you get is worth it. My Yorkies usually live 14-15 years. Pay a little extra so you can have a Yorkie to be proud of and one that wont end up costing you a fortune at the vet, too. I 've know many who bought less quality and were sorry for that. Those cheap pups come with undetected health problems. They may show up soon, or many months later. Several clients have contacted me after very sad experiences their first times. I was able to help them with healthy, happy, well adjusted Yorkies for their second experience. Often, Pet store puppies and lower quality pups come with a lot of problems.

I know you guys have probably discussed CKC registry to death, but would you mind saying it again? A newbie looking for their first Yorkie needs to hear these things. Knowing the lengths that AKC goes to- to make sure their dogs are pure, DNA tested, and can trace their lineage, I just cant respect CKC registry that allowed two folks to say "Yeah, that LOOKS like a Yorkie to me" and then would register that dog as a CKC Yorkie. I've heard they have cleaned up their act some, but what about all the earlier dogs registered CKC?
