Default Male Yorkie needs experienced owner

Hi everyone,

Someone asked me for help in placing this Yorkie. His name is Kami. He was scheduled to be put to sleep at a Los Angeles shelter last year until this woman rescued him. He is estimated to be 8 years old and is very overweight. He was 22 pounds when he was initially rescued. He's since gone down to 18 pounds, but his ideal weight is between 8 and 10 pounds, so he still has a long way to go. She tried to find a home for him on her own, but was unsuccessful and now she can no longer keep him. If anyone can help find this guy a home, please let me know and I will put you in touch with his owner. He is in the San Diego area, but his owner is willing to place him as far as it takes as long as the home is the right one.

Below is Kami's story in the words of his current owner:

"Kami is a big, fat, obnoxious, sweet, loving, monster ;-) He IS a study in opposites! Whatever happened in his past, he learned to respond to any threat by trying to protect himself, which means if threatened, he will growl, snarl, nip and even bite. But he is NEVER the aggressor. He can be in a room full of strange people, and just behave himself, and go about his business. But if a new person tries to pet him, and ignores his signs, they can get themselves bit. He is very, very fair with his body language- he's extremely predictable, but the people around him have to be aware. Because he's cute and fat, people just assume he's cuddly- and once he knows you, he is! He sleeps on my bed, gives face kisses and loves to come and roll over and demand belly rubs at inappropriate times. He's not sneaky or evil, which is why he deserves to find a permanent placement that can bond and understand him, and help keep him safe.

Once he knows someone a little, he'll start to come up to them for love. Again, his body language tells what he's going to do. When he comes up and looks up at you, you can pet him. If he comes up to you and you talk to him, if he averts his eyes and scrunches down, don't pet him. He has to come to you.

He's neutered, and obviously has lived with a million little dogs, and does just fine. Also perfectly fine with cats, except he really likes kitty food. He is obesely fat (18 lbs, down from 22 when I got him), despite a strict diet and I've had him checked out many times at the vet.

Kami needs to go to a rescuer, who understands his issues, and won't put themselves or him in a position where he feels like he has to bite."

Maybe she can contact a yorkshire terrier rescue. They would be able to screen possible homes and get him in the right loving forever home.

She has. The owner is a rescuer herself who's been rescuing dogs, cats, rabbits and horses since the early 90's. However, due to some recent personal problems she has to stop rescuing and must place all her animals as soon as possible.

I believe United Yorkie Rescue would not refuse to take him.

Good God, Tahoe is a 10-lb yorkie. If he gets to 11 or 12 pounds, I can see a huge difference in his energy level, his ability to breath, etc.. I can't imagine how this little guy can get around at more than twice his ideal weight! I gather his long term health is at jeopardy at that weight. Keep up the good work in helping him drop those pounds!
