We're having serious static electricity problems here. I use good shampoos, conditioners and grooming products and have a humidifier going during the winter months but nothing seems to be helping.

I have tried a couple of spray on anti static products but they only work while the dog is being groomed - 10 minutes later the static is back.

Does anyone know of a product(s) that KEEP working? My girls would really appreciate it.

Have you tried a leave in conditioner or hot oil treatment? UPCO and PetEdge are good websites to find good grooming supplies. I'm partial to Biogroom products, but there are others that work well too.

I have used bounce or downy dryer sheets and rub them all over your dog. There is even a sensitive one and it works for about a day then just redo.

I have been putting hand lotion on my hands and then rubbing Roxie's staticy coat and it works pretty well.

Thanks for some more ideas.

I have the Silk Spirits but I haven't used it lately cause I don't like the way it smells.

I will give it a try tomorrow and see what happens.

Yes the drier sheets really work. I have used them on my lab for many years during the winter months. Now that we have our baby we have used them on her too!

I'm glad I seen this thread. I've been battling static with Skittles and my skin kids. Does the dryer sheet trick work with our hair too?????????? I'll be rubbing Skittles down with a dryer sheet now! lol

Please don't rub your dog with a dryer sheet! They are full of toxic chemicals and have been linked to seizures.

According to the EPA, this is what is in a dryer sheet. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin if you rub your dog with a dryer sheet:

* Benzyl acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer.

* Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant.

* Ethanol: On the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders.

* Limonene: Suspected Gastrointestinal or Liver Toxicant, Immunotoxicant,
Kidney Toxicant, Neurotoxicant,
Respiratory Toxicant, and Skin or Sense Organ Toxicant.

* A-Terpineol: Can cause respiratory problems, including fatal edema, and central nervous system damage.

* Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list.

* Camphor: Causes central nervous system disorders.

* Chloroform: Neurotoxic, anesthetic and carcinogenic.

* Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders.

* Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled.

Thanks for posting this information! I thought I had heard once that dryer sheets were bad for pets. I knew that it could be toxic for them to chew on but I wasn't sure about being absorbed through the skin. Now I know!

Plush Puppy sells a product called "Swishy Coat", that is used for static and to help hair lay flat/straight. I never used it for static problems, but thought it is an okay grooming aid. I may have not used enough water with it and would probably get better results if I did.

It's funny you mention about static. Yesterday my Pebby was rolling around in her bed and when she got up she looked like she was electricuted. All of her hair on her head was standing straight up. It was hysterical.

We use a humidifier, through out our home, the air is so dry here. I had to quit using the fabric softener sheets or liquid fabric softener in the girls blankies, towels & clothing items, Prairie Bea and Dollie Dae was allergic big time to them I only use unscented on our things and our bedding. I am allergic to the scented softeners

The one thing that really helped the girls is the cowboy magic conditioner. They don't have any problem now with a static issue. It only takes a little bit and a brushing through their fur

I appreciate this thread. My Romi just turned a year this month and I will have had him for a year come March. We, here in Michigan, had cold weather and possilbility of static for a few months when he was a pup. But have not had this problem till now. I wash and condition him, I try to brush him every couple of days, when I started noticing tangles close to the skin and very hard to get out. Just when I think I have them out, more are there or I missed them and they're worse. I thought maybe the static was contributing to it, and maybe dry skin. I do run a humidifier, too. I just had him groomed and they just about shaved him, wich just breaks my heart. Either they missed some spots or he developed some tangles by that night! (the hair on his head and ears is still a bit long, so I can put it in a pony)
I was also told NEVER condition a Yorkie (he is mixed with a maltese)! Not even a leave in or detangler. He is too soft to begin with. That makes no sence to me. She did recomend a anti stat product, and said I could try to make my own. Dilute frizz ease with water and spray. So that advice seems contradictory! I want him to have a nice shiny mid length coat. A few products were recomended here, and so was lotion and conditioner. Oh, I am so confused. Help!
