| [News] Famous Men and the Dogs That Love Them Here's to fathers - especially fathers of children with four feet and fur, who bark instead of giggle. Here's to the dads of dachshunds and Dalmatians, Doberman pinschers and dandy dinmonts - specifically those spotlighted in "Men & Dogs: A Personal History From Bogart to Bowie," by Judith Watt and Peter Dyer (Atria Books, 150 pages, $15, softcover). This fun handful of photos, history and anecdotes features 80 of the world's "most famous and fascinating men," both past and present. Film stars, musicians, literary figures, athletes, politicians, artists . . . their backgrounds are as mixed as the breeds at a dog pound, but all are united by their love of what in this case is literally man's best friend. The famous fans of Fido that you'll find in this fanciful collection include (to name a few): Muhammad Ali, Clark Gable, George Custer, Spencer Tracy, Neil Young, Gregory Peck, Kevin Spacey, Bob Hope, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Clint Eastwood, Ian Fleming, Truman Capote, DJ Muffs, Paul McCartney and Mark Wahlberg (with a photo that perhaps should be viewed by children only with parental approval). The book is due in bookstores next week, as is its counterpart (you had to know it had a counterpart): "Women & Dogs: A Personal History From Marilyn to Madonna" (Atria, 160 pages, $15, softcover). A peek inside the feminine version reveals that Queen Victoria "had a legendary passion for animals" (one of her first acts as queen "was to become the patron of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals"); romance writer Barbara Cartland often dyed her trademark Pekingese pink; and Venus Williams often celebrates a victory on the tennis court with her Yorkshire terrier, Bobby. However, Sunday is Father's Day. So here's to "Men & Dogs." Among the many: - Humphrey Bogart, photographed with his head on his Newfoundland, Cappy (early 1940s). When neighbors lodged a complaint against the actor's barking boxers - Harvey, Babe and George - the city council in the LA suburb where he lived suggested that he have the dogs' vocal cords removed. According to the book: "'What son of a . . . doesn't like dogs?" raged Bogie. . . . "He ought to be glad he can hear the wonderful sound of dogs barking.' " - James Thurber, with his celebrated standard poodle, Christabel (mid-1940s): Many of the humorist's canine characters were based on his own dogs, including Rex, "the beloved American bull terrier, who dragged a telegraph pole into the house, Muggs the Airedale, who bit people" and Jeannie, a Scottish terrier, who was "an inveterate wanderer." - Elvis Presley, with his first dog, Sweet Pea (1958), a "little mongrel" that "had belonged to his mother, whom he adored." The singer who made a "Hound Dog" famous later had "Great Danes, poodles, and in his final years a chow chow, who appeared on-stage with him in 1975 in Las Vegas." - Gunnar Kaassen, with Balto, the wolf dog (1925): Kaassen was the lead sledder, Balto the lead dog, in the relay of mushers who carried emergency diphtheria vaccine from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, in a race against time in the winter of 1925. Balto, a wolf-husky mix, became "an international hero, and a statue was raised in his honor" in New York's Central Park. - John F. Kennedy, with Dunker, a dachshund puppy (1937): During his time as president, whenever he and the first lady "wanted to have a frank talk in privacy, they would simply take Charlie (a Welsh terrier) and Clipper, Jackie's German shepherd, out for a walk." - Winston Churchill, with Rufus, his miniature poodle (1951): When Churchill was at his country home, "Rufus ate in the dining room." A cloth was placed on the floor next to the statesman, "and no one could begin eating until the butler had presented the poodle with his meal." - Sylvester Stallone, cuddling with his briard (1994): A nearly broke Stallone was on the verge of giving away his longtime friend Butkus, a bull mastiff, when he sold the script for "Rocky." Butkus not only got to stay, Sly even cast him in the movie. The actor continues to keep dogs, as does his mother, who claims that dogs "have clairvoyant powers. They predicted George W. Bush's election victories in 2000 and 2004," the book declares. - Mark Jacobs and his English bull terrier, Alfred (2002): When Alfred first arrived at the Paris home of the fashion designer and artistic director for Louis Vuitton, the canine "had an unfortunate penchant for chewing Louis Vuitton leather goods." Many doggie-obedience lessons later, Alfred is well-behaved enough to accompany Jacobs to restaurants, where steak tartare is the terrier's favorite treat. - Frank Sinatra, on stage with a West Highland terrier (1958): In addition to his own dogs, including a cocker spaniel named Miss Wiggles and a Labrador retriever named Leroy Brown, Ol' Blue Eyes had many dog-loving women in his life. When he was dating Marilyn Monroe, he "gave her a white poodle that she named Maf, an allusion to Sinatra's alleged Mafia connections." - Yves Saint Laurent with Moujik III (1994), one in a string of the designer's French bulldogs. The original Moujik was "a grouchy and snappy dog, doted upon by his owner, who irritated the models at the Maison Marceau by demanding attention and dribbling on their clothes." - Christopher Guest, as Harlan Pepper, with Hubert the bloodhound in "Best in Show" (2000): The actor, writer and director got the idea for "Best in Show" while he and his wife, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, were walking their own canine companions near their house in Los Angeles. Although his "mockumentary" spoofed the world of championship purebreds, Guests' own choice of dogs is more down-to-earth: "two distinctly unshowy mixed breeds." - P.G. Wodehouse, with Jed, the dachshund, and Debbie, the boxer (1960): The writer who created Bertie Wooster and Jeeves shared a love of animals with his wife, Ethel. Their "house was a refuge for stray dogs, cats, and even parrots." But their favorites were their Pekingese, including Mrs. Miffen, Miss Winks, Squeaky, Loopy and Boo. " 'As life goes on,' asked the author, 'don't you find that all you need is about two real friends, a regular supply of books, and a Peke?' " snewman@post-dispatch.com 314-340-8264 _____________________ The secret's out: Dads are really dogs Dads and dogs are a lot alike - as "My Father the Dog" makes delightfully clear. Consider some of the similarities that author Elizabeth Bluemle's little-girl narrator points out in this new children's book (Candlewick Press, $15.99): Dads and dogs both wake up "fuzzy around the edges," and both start the day "with a good scratch." Both like to play ball and tug-of-war. Both love snacks. Just like dogs, dads have "been known to use a tree for a quick pit stop." Dads and dogs are both "good at looking innocent" when they've done something wrong. Best of all, both are loyal and think that they're part of "the best family in the world." Randy Cecil's bold and colorful illustrations add to the fun of this witty book, which youngsters will beg to have read to them again and again as they're curled in Daddy's lap. What better Father's Day gift could a dad ask for than that? http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/lif...9?OpenDocument |
