| [News] Check Out These Clotheshorses California - A new Fashion Island boutique is changing the way we look at our pets, one fabulous puppy at a time. Welcome to Muttropolis, a Paris Hilton-meets-IKEA retail outfit that sells high-end pet clothing and sleek chew-toys for man's best friend. Packed with squeaky cosmo martinis and rhinestone collars, the store begs the question: Does the person own the pet, or the pet the person? "We actually don't like to call them pet owners, we prefer pet parents," said marketing director Janet McCulley, whose Fashion Island boutique is the fourth shop the San Diego company has opened in recent years. Pets are becoming more integrated into the family, McCulley said, and are now rewarded with better toys and cosmetics more conducive to the California lifestyle. In a more subtle way, many specialty breeds are also becoming a status symbol. "Dogs are the new kids," joked store manager Kathy Jones, pointing out that lot of young couples are waiting longer to have kids, often supplanting their empty nest with cats and dogs. Most people want their kids to have the best -- so why not their pets? "She's like our child," said Jodi Bergstedt, while shopping at Muttropolis with her Yorkshire Terrier Koko. "She's got to keep up with the other dogs in town." For Koko, that meant a hot-pink front harness and a rhinestone-studded dog collar. Muttropolis also sells an array of hand-made dog clothing like Green Day, Quiksilver and Rolling "Bones" T-shirts, wool doggie sweaters and black-leather skirts with nylon stockings. Doggie tees retail at about $25 while a "Pup in Paris" miniskirt goes for about $75. Designer gear starts at $100. Besides clothing, many owners want to integrate their everyday pet products into the design of their homes. "We look at trends in the human industry of design and how that can carry over into pet products," she said. "People want pet bedding that is copacetic and harmonious with home décor." The retailer sells specialty glucosamine dog foods, shea butter shampoos and paw balms, spa kits and stylish carrying cases and purses. A favorite of most pets is the store's cleverly designed toys, like balls that release dog treats and speak commands, or DVD movies filled with animals to watch when the dog is home alone. Cats also get in part of the fun: Muttropolis sells chewable cloth cigars and bananas stuffed with catnip. "We have something for every animal in the house," said Mark Sweet, leading a tour of the store. On any given day, dozens of owners will bring in their dogs and occasionally employees will keep their pets behind the counter. "As we grow, it's important to us to become a community meeting place for pet owners," McCulley said, adding that Muttropolis plans to open another 10 retail stores across the country by the end of the year. http://shop.muttropolis.com/ http://www.dailypilot.com/business/s...5p-57226c.html |

| Cute shop but I am AMAZED at their markup! We have half of that stuff in our boutique here that I work at and it's nowhere NEAR that pricey. Glad to know we can stay ahead of the competition with the same stuff at much better prices! haha

| I'm Going! Thank you for the great lead! I don't mean to rub it in but.... I'm very, very close to Fashion Island and will be going there this weekend! Fashion Island is a dog friendly outdoor mall and many shops welcomes our four legged friends. I just told Jazzie & Jewel and they are rearing up to go!
