Default Parvo in New Jersey

My son works at a vet clinic in North west New Jersey and today he called me that they had 3 cases of puppy parvo from puppies bought at the Petpourri store in Rockaway NJ. one of the puppies belong to a friend of a friend of him. right now the puppy is doing poorly and the store SAID they will pay the vet bills.. he is trying to get me the name of the kennels the puppies came from. I will post them when he gives me the name.. all he knows is that they came from a kennel in Missouri.
hugs,

there is also a petpourri in Willowbrook Mall where sick puppies have come from in the past.

stores are bad enough to buy puppies from but mall puppies are even worse. can you imagine what people are thinking: "hey i went to the mall to get some shoes and jean, oh and i bought a puppy too. it just looked so cute in the window so i thought what the hell, and bought it" .... who does that???

Well I have to tell you a LOT of people do. I am shocked at the stories my son tells me over dinner of people going to the clinic with this tiny tiny puppies that they bought at the farmers market or the store, it was a lady at the vet the other day when I was there with my Prada that bought her yorkie at the outdoor bazaar , the pup was about 6 weeks old. and here I am not letting my little mutts go home until they are 11 and 12 weeks.. so sad.. I hope this little pup makes it, my son tells me that is a 5 and 7 year old in the family and they were crying while the mom went in to take the puppy to the dr. it was so sad he said..
hugs,

Could it be the petpourri place in general is infected an not just were the pups came from. I understand they do buy them from BYB but, the puppy could have come from the breeder utd on shots and get the parvo from the petpourri place. Either way its a terrible and deathly situation but maybe the store should be inspected for the Parvo virus and other diseases that are contagious.

I often wonder if people do these types of purchases because they can put them on credit cards.

All I can say is grrrrrrrr They should get up to the plate and make laws against the purchase of pups in stores. She should all be tested for this stuff....by law. Before they put them on display. I'm betting the puppy mills aren't giving these stores their money back for sick pups either, The store should not get it back. Maybe it will burn some sense that puppy mill pups are not worth taking the risk. All those poor pups.

This artical was in the local Central Jersey newspaper today.

PARVO BEWARE !!!!
Posted By Ward Randall On April 23, 2009 (7:39 pm) In Uncategorized

Many years ago, a disease known as parvovirus appeared on the scene, causing multiple deaths of puppies in kennels and pet stores. A vaccination was created, which is now part of a pet’s annual distemper combination shot. With annual vaccination, this brought the disease under control.

Now, through importation and movement of dogs, especially from European countries, a new genetic variant has emerged, called Parvovirus 2 C . It is found now in 15 states, including New Jersey.

This new strain can affect older dogs, as well as puppies. It causes hemorrhagic diarrhea, but also has been found to cause a mustard colored diarrhea as well. The infected pet stops eating, becomes very lethargic, and, without treatment, can die.

My veterinary hospital in Middlesex, New Jersey has recently seen three cases of this disease. All three needed isolation and intensive care, but survived.

The most important thing for a dog owner to do is to make sure your pet is up to date on its’ distemper-parvo combination shot. The old vaccine will protect against the new strain. Make sure new puppies are vaccinated at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age, and then yearly thereafter.

I probably would stay away from pet supply stores and dog parks with new puppies until they are at least 5 months of age. The virus can remain infectious up to 1 year in the soil.

So keep your pets’ vaccinations up to date, even if they are older, and use common sense. Beware of this new strain of parvovirus — it can be deadly !!

Default Parvo

Not so idiotic, I go to the dog store to purchase my dog/cat food. Before I come back into my car, I spray the bottom of my shoes with distilled bleach/water. Spray them at the back door before coming into the house change into slippers. Ever see a Puppy die of parvo? I was a volunter at a shelter, we brought a momma and her puppies in as a rescue. They all died, the entire shelter was closed for a month and evrything was sanitized.
