| Which of these should I feed my Yorkies? Ok I've narrowed it down to three I think...and I can't decide. Which of these foods should I start feeding my babies? I feed Royal Canin now and have allergies problems, etc. Also, let me know below why you feed that particular food and how long you've been feeding it. Thanks! |

| It won't let me vote. This is the order I would go with: Something else entirely (that is homecooked) Life's Abundance or Canidae Merrick

| Gracie and I are hooked on Evanger. The Chicken Casserole looks just like the inside of a chicken pot pie. I think I would eat it! This is the highest quality canned food I have found yet.

| Yep, I have samples on the way...but the only thing I'm concerned about is that it's listed as a 2 star food and I'm starting to read some mixed reviews. The Canidae and Merrick are both 5 star I believe... Quote:

| I am not allowed to vote I would say home cooking is the best but I don't do it anymore as I am living with my in-laws currently. I feed Orijen currently (dry) mix with Wellness canned food and some home cooking when I do cook.

| There's really no reason to have to decide; if you like several different foods, then feed those foods in rotation. I feed my yorkie a cycle of four different high-quality dry foods that use different protein sources. I buy small 4 or 5 lbs bags, and when one bag is nearly out I gradually switch to the next brand over the course of 4 days. Generally speaking, changing between foods that are of similar quality doesn't cause much if any stomach upset. I think of it like this: say for dinner one night you have a chicken breast, a glass of milk, and some green beans. That is a good, healthy, tasty meal, right? But think about eating that same good, healthy meal EVERY day, for EVERY meal. Does it still seem as healthy? Do you think it would still taste as good the hundredth time in a row that you ate it? I really think that a variety of foods is the right way to go, especially when you consider that a wild dog is an opportunistic feeder and gets its nutrients from a variety of sources-- different types of meat they hunt, different sorts of plants they run across, with little consistency from one meal to the next. Dogs aren't meant to be fussy eaters with sensitive tummies-- I think we make them that way by locking them into one food.

I would vote for "something else" being home cooking and/or raw. If you want to use kibble though I second rotating it. Another DFA link about rotating foods.

| Ok, thanks guys. I think I will rotate between some different ones...that does make sense. Maybe I could even mix a couple foods half and half? Mine are so picky, so I usually have to change anyways every few months because they stop eating it! Thanks a lot for your advice! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I picked Canidae, bc I'm assuming you want to stick w/ kibble. Otherwise, I'd first recommend home cooking.

| I voted for Canidae because that is what I am feeding with very good results. I have fed Life's Abundance and wasn't all that impressed. Choosing the right food for your Yorkie Kids is a personal choice -- it sounds like you are doing all the right things -- educating yourself, geting ideas from others and becoming a label reader. |

| Ok just got back from the pet store...I got a small bag of Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul, and a medium bag of both Canidae Lamb and Rice and Merrick Puppy Plate. I also got several different kinds of the Merrick and Chicken Soup canned foods. I'm going to try them one at a time mixed with their regular food and see what they think. Then I'll pick their two favorites and keep buying them to mix! Thanks again for the advice! |
