| How big an open fontanel? Can you guess or gently measure the diameter? They often actually are closed at birth, some will be born with open fontanels that close over time often before 6 months. Some can take a year or two of age to close, some never do. Whether or not it is an issue with him is uncertain. An open fontanel doesn't necessarily mean a problem and certainly many have lived long lives with them. Just don't drop anything on his head which you wouldn't want to do wtih any Yorkie or small dog anyway. If he is also hydrocephalic, sometimes marginally, it would be best if it didn't close as it allows the excess fluid in the chambers of the brain a place to expand a bit although it won't actually bulge out. An open fontanel is not always an indication of hydrocephalus condition but can be. |
