| Whether to spay or not? Out of the blue today the idea of getting Precious spayed today popped into my head so I decided to do some research. Then I was introduced to a new disease that I have never heard of - pyometra. It's been worrying me all day & I just don't know what to do. I also read that spaying increases the chance for a type of cancer - hemangiosarcoma & also other complications. She will be 7 on the 21st of this month & the reason she wasn't spayed earlier was because when my mom asked if we wanted to get it done I panicked & said no because I was only 11 & was so afraid for my new best friend to get surgery. & I just don't know if I should get it done & it's worrying me so much that I'm even crying while typing this. (I cry over everything about her, like when she got her teeth cleaned under anesthesia I cried so much & so hard) She just means so much to me & I don't want to make the wrong decision. I don't want her to suffer from my decisions & I just wouldn't know what to do without her & I don't know what to do now & it's making me extremely anxious & shakey |

| As long as she is healthy and safe for anesthesia, I would spay her.

| Some years back when I got my first baby I didn't have her spayed, she was to me just a baby and I feared her going under surgery, 3 years later I got her a sister, also did not have her spayed. My first un-spayed at age 13 y/o got Pyometra, her uterus erupted sending puss through out her blood , she underwent a full Hysterectomy. She came home, for nine days I watched her die before my very eyes. 6 months later my 2nd un-spayed girl age 10 y/o came down Pyometra, I knew the symptoms and rushed her to the vet, she also underwent full Hysterectomy, she lived for 6 months after surgery. My first girl that died before my eyes I would NEVER want to see anyone go through their baby dieing such a horrible, painful way. PLEASE spay your girl.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I know surgery can feel so scary! But do what's best for your baby...put your feelings aside as best you can, and get 'er done. As long as pre-surg bloodwork checks out okay, she should be fine .

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | haemogiosarcoma is rather rare in Yorkies. The research I have read is yes there is a worrisome increase in this cancer but it is more applicable to large breed dogs - of note the Golden Retreiver. The risks of pyrometra on the other hand are of a high concern - especially with unbred females and as they age. Each year tends to increase that risk. I will also point out that breast cancer rises as well. Your girl has had all her growing well behind her and baring other contra indicators (of which your vet should inform you) then she is best spayed. At least this is the decision I would make for my female dogs.

| I should have added, I had 2 other females that I did have spayed, One passed at 13 y/o the other at age 17 y/o, no cancer in either of them. Not spaying can also cause mammary gland tumors along with Pyometra.
