| ~Prey Model Raw Meal Plan~ Since I've had a few pm's from folks interested in learning more about what I feed my dogs; I thought I'd dedicate a thread to it; as certainly any yorkie that joins my family will be receiving this as well! Now I am not ever going to bash kibble; my only intent is to educate those interested in why raw makes sense. One common thing I'm asked is "Does it cost more than dog food?" And the answer is, "No." If I were feeding a good 6-star grain free kibble or freeze dried ZP/S&C's, I wouldn't be able to afford to feed all my dogs! Fortunately prey model raw is wonderful for their health as it is what nature intended (it literally mimics prey; 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 10% organ (liver and kidney) ; and easy on the wallet. For six dogs who eat 4 ounces a day; it comes out to less than $2 a day that we spend on their food. For someone who just has a few little dogs it's much less! You choose what you spend; if you go to import supermarkets or some small-town grocers or butchers give great deals on "staples" to us like beef heart. We spend less than 99cents a pound on most of their diet; chicken necks for bones are around 69cents per lb. Organ meats are cheap too. If you can get grass-fed meats then this will not be necessary; but if feeding regular grocery store meats, a fish oil supplement is recommended. Anyway here's a link that better explains the why's; How to Get Started | Prey Model Raw and below is the meal plan we follow for our 4lb to 6lb dogs. Sources: MEAT: Beef/Pork (heart is excellent), Chicken Hearts/Gizzards, Turkey & Chicken Breast BONE: Chicken Necks; Chicken Wing Tips LIVER: Beef Liver KIDNEY: Pork Kidney Monday: AM- 2oz MEAT PM- 2oz MEAT (Add a squirt of Fish Oil) Tuesday: AM: 2oz BONE PM: 2oz LIVER Wednesday: AM: 2oz MEAT PM: 2oz MEAT Thursday: AM: 2oz MEAT PM: 2oz MEAT (Add another squirt of fish oil) Friday: AM: 2oz MEAT PM: 2OZ MEAT Saturday: AM: 2OZ BONE PM 2OZ KIDNEY Sunday: AM: 2oz MEAT PM: 2oz MEAT So all it really comes down to is feeding bone and organ two days a week; and the rest is just meat. The fish oil is there to supplement the Omega-3's but that is the only thing you really need to add. (If you feed grass-fed beef, this isn't necessary.) I hope that helps put my dog's diet "in a nutshell" for anyone who may be curious. If anyone has any questions I'll be happy to answer. =) |
