| Orijen~How much protein is TOO much? I've been feeding Baby Evangers for years-26% protein. Well, I usually buy my dog food online but was desperate so I ran into a local pet store that I knew sold premium food (and dogs ). Well, they didn't carry Evangers dry anymore! The lady suggested Orijen, and I should have stuck to my gut b/c I remember reading somewhere that too much protein for a Yorkie who isn't overly active isn't good for them, but I didn't listen to my gut. I brought it home and it's protein is 38%! Now, the bag does say for all breeds and gives recommended feeding guidelines for Active and Less Active dogs. So does anyone know exactly how much protein is TOO MUCH for a less active Yorkie? Thanks in advance!

| that is too high protein period for any but sporting/working dogs during the time they are doing field trials or herding trials whatever sport they are in. For Yorkies and indeed the average pet, not a good choice. I did try it but ended up with sick dogs. I now went back to Natural Balance Ultra small breed bites. Never had an issue with it, don't know what i was thinking trying Orijen. |

| If you are too concerned with high protein you should really read the articles on orijens website!!! All the info is from studies done by veterinarians and at universities. Orijen is a very good dog food, and i personally know dogs who have done awesome on it. But even if it is a good dog food, there will still be some who do good on it and some who dont. I would try it before i would decide it doesnt work. |

| I think it is far wiser to research the best food for the breed rather than researching just the food. I am afraid most dog food companies make all sorts of claims as to why their food is fine. The best info you will find on what to feed a yorkie, is asking long time breeders, perhaps the breeder you bought the dog from. I certainly make recommendations, give a good supply of the food along with any dog or puppy I sell, along with what ones to avoid that for most breeders including me has not worked well for a yorkie. |

| I think its very smart to try and see whats best for your dog. There is no one dog food good for a certain breed. I think this forum is perfect proof that there are many good foods for yorkies. |

| I've tried a lot of food before settling on Evangers. You sure do learn a lot about food here on YT! I would just like to know a decent range for a small breed dog. Thought I'd ask here before doing research on the Net!

| Like you i have tried alot of different foods, trying to find the best. The highest protein i have fed was 33, and my yorkie did good on it. The lowest i have fed was 24, and my dog did good on that too. I personally wouldnt be worried about 38% protein. But thats just because i have read alot on protein and i have seen small dogs do really good on it. |

| Rather than testing foods on your pups without knowing basic requirements, I suggest reading the site I will paste below that is maintained by Dr. Rebecca Remillard. It is full of interesting information. Her credentials are at this site: MSPCA-Angell: Nutrition Team Here is her website: About our founder
