YT Addict | Treats to help gain weight? Just wondering if anyone has any suggestion on a brand of treat I could give Lolli to help her gain some weight? Since her spay she seems really under weight, I can feel her spine so bad protruding and not so much her ribs but when she lays on her side I can. It didn't use to be this bad until then but I want to help her gain just a little weight but I don't want to switch her food again so I thought maybe there might be some kinda treats I could get for her??

Our girl needed to gain a bit of weight so we feed her a little bit extra of her regular food (we homecook). We did it slow over a few months. Have you talked to your vet to make sure there is no medical problem causing her to lose weight? Last edited by PunkinPie; 12-09-2009 at 08:48 AM. | |

| weight What food do you have her on? How old is she? My Ginger was given to me in June at 5yrs old and you could feel all her bones. I had to get her spayed, get rid of flakey skin and one ear was dry and cracking. I feed NV kibble and for her to get the weight on I also give her NV Instinct can food. I add coconut oil to her food also. It took about three months to see a change but now I can only feel her spine very little. I think she has gained like 1 1/2lbs. I hope this helps.

YT Addict | She's on Natural Balance which is a grade A food according to this site. I'm asking for treats, her food is good and is healthy for her and I just switched her to it and don't want to switch again. There's no underlying problem, the spay made her lose a little weight others have said that happened to theirs, too. I just want to know a high calorie type of treat or something that will aid in her gaining weight back.

YT Addict | So there isn't anyone who has any experience with having to help their furbabies gain a little weight? I'm sure you didn't just change the food alone, there has to be some kind of treats that are good in aiding with this? Please?

| Gaining weight has never been a problem around here...we joke about my girls having 'butt cheeks'! They aren't overweight though...they're just healthy! However, the 2 boys I just got need to gain a little so I have added puppy food to their diet along with their regular kibble...it has more calories and can be added and removed later. I feed them a scrambled egg over their kibble for breakfast a couple of times a week and at supper time I add some cooked lean ground beef, a little cooked pasta and veggies a couple times a week...they also get bites of banana and apple. Also, I noticed when I was feeding a home cooked diet with veggies, chicken and rice they added weight quickly. I would be careful adding treats to her diet...she may get so used to the extra treats that she will go off her food and that wouldn't be good. I think I would try just adding a few things to her kibble and then gradually take them out when she has gained enough weight. |

So the part where you said adding treats might make her go off her food isn't only subject for treats. I feed her treats now, like carrots for her teeth and some training treats and she doesn't stop eating the kibble with it. I just need something that is meant to help with weight gain specifically or is known just for high calories in general. But I guess I'll just have to google. Thanks, though.

| Silky balls are supposed to help. Do a search for the recipe.

| Sorry it is satin balls. Here is what was posted on the recipe forum. This is a treat that promotes good coat care.... Satin Balls is a formula that promotes coat and weight on dogs, it is also used for very picky eaters. I have never seen a dog turn up their nose at them. Mix together: 1 lb. hamburger (very cheap with high fat content) 1 1/3 cup Total cereal, 1 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1 large egg, 1/2 cup wheat germ, 1 pkg Knox gelatin, 2 T. cooking oil (I use coconut oil), 2 T. molasses. I also add 2 or 3 T. Mirra Coat supplement (or whatever supplement you may have), 2 or 3 T Malt ( like you put into icecream to make malts, we use Ovaltine Malt). Make balls (I make each ball about 1/4 cup and can get 2 into a ziplock snack baggie.) and freeze. We laid ours on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper, when it was filled layer another piece of wax paper and then balls and freeze. Once frozen then place them in baggies and keep in freezer until ready for use, thaw in microwave just until not frozen. DO NOT COOK!!! The lady we got this recipe from says she splits 1 ball between 4 chins and 3 chihuahuas every day. Start out with a very small amount and build up slowly, it is VERY rich and can give them diarrea. I feel this could be split between same amount of yorkies. Enjoy!!!

| It seems first and foremost, you need a treat she will eat. Mine loved cheese so I'd recommend that but if she doesn't like cheese, I'd give her what ever kind of treat she really likes. |

YT Addict | She pretty much would eat anything I try to give her. I mean I never would have thought that any dog would like to eat things such as vegetables (in particular, carrots) but sure enough she loves her little carrot treats.
