| Need Help and Advice, what is wrong??? One of my furbutts has had loose stool for the past couple months. My vet has done 2 fecals and they were both negative, but we tried several different medications, including Albon, to clear it up. Nothing has worked. There is no blood, just a light colored runny stool. I have also carefully switched foods a couple times, thinking this could be the cause. It continues no matter what she eats. What could this be? |

| Albon (Sulfadimethoxine), from what I understand is an antibiotic used for a variety of bacterial infections, in both human and animal. If he is treating your animal with anitbiotics, then he is assuming that the stools are caused by some kind of bacterial/parasitic infection. Unfortunately, the antibiotics that kill the bacteria, also destroy the natural bacteria that lives in your digestive tract. The infection that started the diarrhea, might be gone but the side effects of Albon, which is diarrhea, might still be showing up. I would try a plain natural organic yogurt, that would increase the probiotic activity in his digestive tract. Do not do the non-fat or sugar-free. Try to get him to take a tablespoon + a couple of times a day at least. I would also stick with boiled chicken and white rice; a bland diet for awhile. Keep your vet in the loop, and let him know what you are doing. That way he knows that the condition is still occuring. Keep us posted and good luck. |

Thank you, it seems we have tried everything, even as simple as Pepto. I tried the chicken and rice for several days, I think it was one week to be exact. The results did not change. I just went to the store today and found some yogurt listed with probiotics, plain vanilla but not sugar free. I gave it this evening so we will see how this works. Right now I am feeding a bland recovery diet and now have mixed in the yogurt. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. | |
