Luxating patellas Help!!!!!I figured out one of my yorkies has one or two luxating patellas! She is 6 yrs old, and she doesn't cry out in pain, but she can't hardly jump, and when she runs, she runs like a rabbit, hopping. I just thought it was a temproary thing, but no, I found out what it really is and I am very worried. I read about it, and they said surgery is not too good, but that you might need it. Help! Anyone out there that really knows about it? Thanks guys!

| Hi. Due to Schatzie's recent surgery for Legges Perthes I also read up on Lux. Patella. It occurs when the patella,, or knceecap slips out of place. When the knee (patella) is out of position it usually can't return to its normal position until the quad muscle relaxes, which causes the leg to straighten at the knee. (bunny hop's for a bit until the patella pops back into place. There are 4 grades, grade 1 being minor and grade 4 most severe with the patella always out of position and cannot be replaced manually. Also, the dog will never put weight on it and requires surgery. Hereditary or enviornment (jumping) is the cause for Lux. Patella's. Grade 1 = the dog may occasionaly skip, patella can be shifted back into place. Grade 2 = the dog often holds the affected leg up when running or walking. When the leg is manipulated it has a grinding feeling. The patella usually slides back into position by itself. Grade 3 = the patella is permanently out of position. Even when the patella is placed back into position it wont stay long. Grade 4 = permanent patella out of position. The dog may look bowed in appearence and this could be in one or both legs. It is usually present by 4-6 months of age. Although symptoms may go unnoticed for years. This is not all the info but I hope this helps in your understanding of it. Also, affected dogs should not be breed.

Tinker has the same problem My angel is 10 mos old and has I believe a grade 3 or 4. My vet told me that it doesn't hurt her when her little knee pops, and she shouldn't be in any pain. He said that she will need surgery when she is older, but right now I shouldn't worry. Tinker runs like a bunny too so I don't think that should be a major concern, because I think all little ones have a rabbit tendecy =). If she is having problems jumping I would do whatever I could to keep her from doing that. I have ramps everywhere. I put a pillow or two down next to the couch to help her get up, but also to help with the impact of jumping off. I also have a ramp that I bought online that I put on my bed. Tinker is fearless and will jump off my really high bed so I put a ramp there so she can get up and down with out hurting herself. Lastly, I would ask your doctor about a joint supplement. Good Luck!!

Pet Steps I got my pets steps at http://www.luckycatfurniture.com/12and3petsteps.html . I believe they are having a sale right now. If you don't like those just go to msn.com or yahoo.com and search pet steps.

Those are nice steps at that site, TinkerToy, are your steps heavy? The wheels on the back are a nice feature.

Yeah, they are kind of heavy. I didn't get wheels, because they stay in the same place all the time so it isn't a problem for me. If you think you are going to be moving it around I would get wheels: 1) it is easier on you and 2) you won't have to worry about setting it down on your lil' one. They are quick lil' things and can be right at your feet and you won't even know it. So it all depends on what you plan on doing with it. =)
