| Tea Tree Oil Toxic to Dogs and CATS Earthclinic.com entry TEA TREE OIL'S TOXICITY TO CATS AND DOGS 02/18/2009: Laurel from Detroit, Mi writes: "I used a tea tree oil/ aloe mixture to treat a skin infection on my dog. she had absolutely no effect by the mixture except a shiny coat and flake free skin." [WARNING!] 11/06/2007: Craig from Cumberland, MD writes: "Tea tree oil is toxic to dogs and cats. It is readliy absorbed through the skin and can cause breakdown of the nervous system, resulting in shock, hypothermia, and death. I know because I accidently poisoned my dog by putting about a teaspoon of tea tree oil on a tick bite. Hours later she couldn't stand, was disoriented, and shivering. I gave her activated charcoal by mouth and bathed her and rubeed the spot with activated charcoal. She got better quickly after the charcoal, and the vet said she was lucky. Do not use Tea Tree Oil." |

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | A while back, I purchased earthbath Hot Spot & Itch Relief plus Skin & Coat Conditioners with oatmeal, aloe, & Vit E. It is a Tea Tree Oil spritz!! Thank God I never used but once because I just hated the smell! If these products are even remotely dangerous for our babies, why on earth aren't they taken OFF the market??

| I know it is dangerous for cats, but I'm not sure that in very small doses it is really dangerous for dogs. It is known as a treatment for leather ear. And definitely there are all kinds of uses for tea tree oil for humans

| It is supposed to be good for fungal problems and does have some other uses; but if ingested can be highly toxic. Causes some kind of neurological problems and/or death. I know that it is an ingredient in some shampoos and I have heard that is safe because it is a small amount and it is rinsed off; but I will not use it. I don't want to take that chance.

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for starting this thread! I bought a bottle of straight Tea Tree Oil last summer for my other dogs, Pippi and Peaches when they had Hot Spots, and I put it directly on their skin - in straight form I will never ever be using this stuff again! I am going to go through all of my doggie products and throw out anything with Tea Tree Oil in it. I DO NOT want to take any chances! Thanks again for this informative post!
