| puppy won't eat I have a 8 week old Yorkie that refuses to eat on his own. I took him to the vet yesterday and he was Hypoglycemic. I have been giving him Nutra cal and I now have to feed him every hour and alternate with Karo syrup mixed with water. He still doesn't appear to be very playful but it's an improvement from day before yesterday when he wouldn't hardly move. Today he seems to be quivering a bit. Any suggestions for getting him to eat on his own? and for the quivers? |

| Is he drinking water? How long have you had him? 8 weeks is far too early to be away from his mom. It's possible that he doesn't know how to eat. What are you feeding him?

| puppy won't eat The vet has him on a/d perscription diet mixed with a tiny bit of water every hour. At first I tried pedigree puppy, the breeder said that is what she had been giving him. I bought some second steps powered form and mixed it he didn't eat that on his own either. He drinks plenty of water but when he checks out the food he show no interest. The breeder stated that mom was no longer feed him. I thought it was pretty typical for puppies to be away from their mom at 8 weeks. |

| No, 8 weeks is not the norm 12 is. I have 2, 12 week old puppies that I am having to teach how to eat. They never learned from their mom. At 8 weeks, this is when they should be learning to eat and play good. If they are taken away from their teacher, then you need to do it. I've also tried all the different foods and combinations. What I have learned is to feed them from a small plate instead of a bowl. Then, get him to lick your fingers and then put some of the puppy gruel (ground up puppy food mixed with Esbilac or whatever milk replacer you have) on your finger and get them to lick that. Gradually lower your finger to the plate until he realizes the food is there. You may have to do that each time you feed him until he remembers. Also, what worked for my puppies was canned chicken that I flaked out real small. Not the best diet, but it's what got them started eating. Now I'm introducing the puppy gruel to get them off the chicken.
