Animal Smiley 019 Is it a myth? Cutting puppy hair too short too soon?

I thought I read somewhere that if you cut a puppy coat too short, too early that it will mess up the coat color when he/she is older. I've looked everywhere this morning and can't find where I read that. Is this a myth or true??

Gizmo is almost six months old and he loves to be outside. With his long hair, he tends to get overheated very quickly, get mats on his legs and chest, and seems to find every sticker in the neighborhood.

I just think he would be much more comfortable and happy with a short cut. He will not be shown or bred. We're planning to do agility eventually, but that's it.

Anyone know if it's okay to cut his hair short?

I heard it can be good to get it cut once while they are a puppy. Sometimes the pup hair is thicker and tangles but when you cut it out the adult hair comes in nicer

Sounds like an old wives' tale to me. Kindof like the one where people say your hair will grow faster if you keep it trimmed. The truth of the matter is, if you keep it trimmed, it won't break off as much, thus adding to the length. The dog's hair is going to be whatever color it's going to be whether you cut it or not. Post pics of the little bogger so we can see the new do!!

Yorkies coats can and will change color but it does not make a difference if you cut them or not. If it is going to be easier on the dog and you then what difference does the coat color matter anyway?????

Cut the coat and be happy!!!

Animal Smiley 036 Myth

I think that would be a myth myself... Its like you shaving your head completely bald - Im pretty sure your hair will come back the same color/texture... If he has "matts" then I wouldnt hesitate. Meka is 6 mo and I just cut her last week for the same reason. We are in California, so I would feel so bad taking her outside with such a think coat.

I went to Target and they had a complete kit (Andies Cutting Kit for Dogs) with how to DVD and all... It was only $25 and worth it!!! As you can see below... I dont think I did too bad for the first time - Good luck!

I think she looks great! Good job! We bought the Wahl Pet Groomer and it came with a video that was awful, but we figured it out, I think. We paid around $30 or $40 for it, so you got a good deal.

I think it's a myth. I had to cut Sadie pretty young (tangles...silly puppy wouldn't let me brush her) and I think her hair is the same color it would have been anyway. The roots were the color that she is now.

Glad you got it done girl! I'm sure he IS much happier now That is wonderful!

Stedman got his first cut when he was exactly 5 months old. He still (of course) had all of the super duper THICK black puppy coat and the reason I got it cut is because it was just getting out of hand. His hair has always grown really fast - so at 5 months old, I said - that's it! Time for your first trim Steddy!

I guess I should mention that I WAS NOT happy when they groomed him (I took him to Petsmart - how DUMB of me ) and they cut him, way, way, WAY too short for my liking. He looked like a Schnauzer I was sooo shocked and upset when I saw him for the first time. I took him in black, and he came out silver That part was fine, but his hair was just WAY too short.

Of course though, it grew back out - and indeed, very nice Anyway, I vowed from that day forward that I would start grooming him myself, and I have been doing so ever since
