I've been researching about potty training and pee pads lately. I came across a lot of posts saying that the puppy thinks the carpet is the same as the pee pad because they feel the same, therefore, they think it's okay to pee on the carpet. Is this true? Or will the puppy learn to pee only in a certain spot? I want to know because my apartment is totally carpeted except the kitchen and bathrooms and I don't want the puppy to think that carpet = pee pad.

I think that at first they will not be able to tell the difference between a pee pad and the carpet. I have hardwood floors and tile in every room except my bedrooms and I have had to pull up all my rugs because they potty on them, and if they are in my bedroom and need to potty they will just help themselves to my carpet. Good luck. It is going to be a struggle with all carpet. You will probably have to keep them blocked off in your kitchen when you can't watch them.

Thanks for your reply genie. Would you know of any other option for an apartment owner? I don't have a balcony. I live on the 7th floor. I really want what's best for the puppy. I work at home so I would be there all day. I do go to night class 3 days a week for a few hours. I'm planning to leave him in the kitchen when I can't give him my full attention.

I don't have a puppy yet, but am planning to get one soon. I just want to get all the information I can get especially about potty training since that is the #1 issue when it comes to owning pets.

Tons of info on this site about potty training - so keep reading, there is great advice here. I do think carpet is problematic and I do think it has the same "feel" as pads. I wish I had advice, but I go through the same thing. I think it just takes much longer to teach them the carpet is not okay, the pad is.

Your dog won't mistake carpet for grass, but you'll have to change the sod weekly (which might be expensive as well, not sure how much sod costs?).

Also, instead of pee pads, you could use newspaper. I think there'd be less of a newspaper-feeling-like-carpet issue.

There was a thread on here about a idea to buy a child size play tent to put the pads in. I would think this would be a great way for the pup to know he need to go in a certain place. Also if you used that housebreaking spray as a added reinforment. Really clean where he has gone on the carpet. Even use something like carpet powder freshener, to get rid of the smell.Good luck.
