Default Potty Training

I've had Missy pee pad trained for a while now... since she was 12 weeks old... she's now approaching 6 months... well, now we want her to go potty outside... we live in an apt and just don't have the ability to go down every 30 mins.. to an hour to let her out... sooo we've set up her crate close to the balcony sliding doors with a barrier so she only has alittle space between in the living room to eat and get into her crate... and since it's nice out now, we leave the balcony door open so she can go out as she pleases to do her thing outside...

well guess what??? now, she's not eating or drinking her water so she doesn't go potty!!! WHAT DO I DO??? she's held in her number 2 for almost 24 hours!! and pee'd in the right area on the balcony on her pad twice, once last night before bed, and once this morning... i'm scared she'll starve and dehydrate herself... any advice??

Why do you want to train her to go outside? If you're not going to walk her it may be a little hard to do- especially since you won't be able to leave the door open during the winter! Was she having accidents in the house? She might just be confused because she's not used to the new situation? Did you used to keep her in her crate? could it be that she doesn't like having to stay in her crate/outside? Yorkie I believe are mostly indoor dogs so maybe she really just doesnt like being outside? I really have no idea what could be wrong obviously (I'm trying though!) =) but I hope you figure it out- good luck! I can definitely relate with potty training/crating issues my 3 year old spaniel rottweiler mix- she didn't like to eat after being in her crate either!

well, it took a little while but we let her out for a bit to run around the condo... and she started eating... lol then when she started to do the squat to go potty... not in the normal spot (normal spot was the guest washroom - we just closed the door to that) I picked her up and walked right outside to the balcony.. when she finished there, i gave her a treat and started jumping up and down praising her, and gave her another treat.. lol and now she's been going on the balcony!!! wow.. my princess is a smartie... hope she keeps it up....

reason why i wanted to change it was cuz she was stinkin up the guest washroom...even with us changing the pad 2 - 3 times a day and spraying... you could still smell some scent... it's a new place, built a little over a year ago... when my friends came over, i'd feel a bit embarrassed... some of my friends asked to use my own bedrm washroom!!!

In the winter, i know it's cold... hence the reason i know we'll hardly go out.... but she'll just have to do it quick!! hopefully we can get that bell thingy, or have her scratch at the sliding doors... we have 2 ways to the balcony, through my bedrm and my living rm, we have a little shovel that can remove the snow that's in her path...

Good! I'm glad she figured it out! I can definitely empathize about the smell though in our case its the puppy more than the pad or anything! Yorkies are sooo smart- we only got Roo two weeks ago and she just turned 3 months and already she knows to use the pad and as long as she's in the kitchen blocked in she uses it every time- well she has to be blocked in the kitchen and the pad has to be pretty new- she's so funny. Anyway good luck with the rest of training!
