does he go potty in his crate? if not, you might want to get him an ex-pen. its larger then a crate and give him room for a bed, toys, and food/water. this may stop him from drying so much. Also if he is crying remember not to let him out until he is quite so he'll learn that being quite leads to him getting out and having play time.

he has only pottied in there 2ce b/c i had to leave in in there for a long period of time & had no one to take him out, but other than that he is really good about holding it while he is in his crate.

since he's doing well and not pottying in the crate i'd either stick it out with the barking/whining or get him a bigger pen. i agree that he shouldn't have free roam yet. too many things could happen that could set him back in the housebreaking training.

Hello!
When I brought my pup home at four months old we had an exercise pen waiting for him in the kitchen. We took him outside for housebreaking ever hour and sometimes 1/2 hour. Even so he did have accidents in the pen.
As far as the crate is concerned, we purchased a small crate, just large enough for him to sleep, stand, and turn around. This was the recommendation of the breeder. She also recommended that he sleep in his crate an night with a towel over the crate. He was quiet from the first day we brought him home. To this day he sleeps in his crate with a "lights out" and his towel. Perhaps your pup will not whine so much if the towel is placed over his crate.
Lots of good luck with your puppy. You are going to love being a Yorkie owner!

When Venus was young, I had several memeber says put the crate at night, where they can see you. It really cut back the whining to 0!!!

I got a baby gate at Target really cheap, and let her roam the kitchen, and put a pee pad down for her in there, when I was going to be gone too long.

Carful which kind you buy though, as mine is a climber! Many of us had climbers! I got the one that looked like bars, and attached plexiglass (Lowe's or Home Depot) to the front so she couldn't walk through the bars.

Good luck!

I see you live in Texas. I'm a huge believer in training while the dog is tired/calm. I would take Cash for a long walk (15-20 minutes) and then see him get sleepy and put him in his crate. He'll probably start to fall right asleep. I also take Parker out to potty BEFORE he starts crying so if he's sleeping I'll usually push it to every 3-4 hours a night. He'll probably like the crate after a while. I would just keep him exercised and tired! Oh and I always covered the crate so keeping it where he can see you depends on the puppy. If Parker sees me he wants to play, so covering the crate worked wonders.

Why yes i live in Texas. He doesnt ever really seem tired. he is constantly moving. The only time he wines is if he needs outside now he just started doing that im soo happy !! He is doing sooo good on the potty training. i just hate him wining. but, i will try to make sure he gets as tired as i can get him lol. he is a ball of energy.

They are little so tiring them out is pretty easy and quick to do. I run with Parker in spurts for 15-20 minutes. I swear it really does the trick!

I had a hard time crate training Bauer at first. He would cry and bark at night too. I agree that the best thing to do is tire him out before bed. Eventually, he'll get used to the crate. It's also good to start teaching him the word "quiet". Bauer is almost a year old now, he loves his crate and sleeps through the night. Sometimes when I put him to bed he barks. I simply say "Bauer Quiet!" and he listens. Now he sleeps until he hears my alarm clock go off in the morning, then he barks to let me know he's awake too.

Just be patient it gets easier. The very best thing you can do for your puppy is have a routine. The dog will rest well and wait patiently if he knows what to expect. If he knows that you'll take him for a walk as soon as you wake up he won't cry if he has to pee, if he knows that you'll feed him right after his walk in the morning he won't cry for food, etc.

I hope this helps!
