| Skin and Intestinal Issues I have a Yorkie who is almost 4 months old (I've had her since she was 5 weeks old). She's been having two issues. The first issue has been happening on and off, but more frequently recently. She has trouble defecting. I took her to my vet and he said she is most likely dehydrated. Her X-Rays showed that there were no issues with her colon. I have increased her water intake per the vet's instructions. Food-wise, I originally had her on Stella and Chewy's dehydrated, which I was hydrating with low sodium chicken broth for extra water intake. I was then told that the fiber content in the food was too high and could be causing this (max fiber is 4%). So, over the past week, I have been experimenting with different high quality canned foods with max fiber ranging from 1-1.5% and mixing in a teaspoon of olive oil per meal. This seems to have helped a tiny bit, but she's still having issues defecating (often, nothing comes out and she whines as she's trying to pass her stool). A couple of days ago, she squeezed out a piece of poop that was huge and the size of what a 10-15 pound dog would produce (she's a little over 3 pounds). Should I try a stool softener? The second issue started about a week ago. She started biting her back, which left two scabs. A day or so later, she stopped biting and it appeared to get better. A couple of days ago, her back started peeling like a sunburn. As the days go by, it peels more and more and as it peels, hair falls out with it, so she's starting to go bald on the lower left side of her back. Any ideas as to what might be causing the above? Thanks for any help. Last edited by ytr; 05-11-2015 at 06:32 PM. |

| Hi welcome to YT. Have you tried canned pure pumpkin? I know they say it helps for both constipation and diarrhea. I think I would put another call in to my vet. Seems like there could be more than just dehydration. Plus I would want him to look at her back issue. Good luck and keep us updated.

| Yeah, I was thinking it might be time for another vet visit. I was adding canned pumpkin to her food, but was told to stop because it was adding to the fiber content and possibly contributing towards a large, compacted stool. |

| Do you have a photo of her back? What concerns me is the possibility of cutaneous vasculitis. This can happen from vaccines. It does not itch to my knowledge, but can look like a burn. Here is info on it...and if you google it you can view lots of images of what it looks like: Inflammation of the Skin Blood Vessels in Dogs | petMD She definitely needs to see a vet and I would mention the above to him. If she has it the treatment is prednisone or another med I cannot think of right now for at least three weeks....possibly longer. Without treatment it can get really bad. As for food, is she on a puppy food? I have pups on this food that you may shy away from, but I can tell you that I have used it with many pups and they have done very well. At least look at the link before being put off with the name Hill's. Natural Dog Food - Hill's Ideal Balance Dog Food I am surprised the vet didn't suggest a prescription food for now such as Hill's ID or Purina EN.

| Hi there. Sorry to hear your baby isn't feeling so hot. I don't know if this will help, but my lil Sunni had terrible tummy issues when I first got her. It was a combination of issues so finding a solution was really difficult. Her problem was mostly loose stools, and I did use the canned pumpkin which hardened everything right up. I did start adding organic plain or pumpkin yogurt to her diet every morning and a bit of organic coconut oil. About 2 tbls of yogurt and a tsp or so of coco oil. Its made a huge difference. She has perfectly normal stools now and no skin issues. Its probably a good idea to run this past your vet, though my vet approved of this Also, I agree at this point she may need to be on a prescription diet food. Good luck! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would go back to the vet asap with this odd skin issue. As for the defecating, yes, I would be asking about a stool softener from the vet too.

| She is very young imo to have bowel issues. I might be thinking about an internal med specialist for this.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Yes this is really unusual. In the long run you save heartache - time and money- to go to a fully staffed ER hospital - but not on an emergency basis - get your vet to refer you to the closest one.
