| Dog attacked and sick... I am sitting here worried sick. I received an email from a local shelter today about a female yorkie who had been apparently attacked by a dog. They said she had deep lacerations and needed to be out of there for treatment ASAP. One of our Houston members contacted the vet at the shelter and the description/details about this poor baby were beyond disgusting. Poor little thing has old lacerations on her back and an abscess in her mouth, multiple contusions and abrasions on her boy and maggots in her mouth and crawling in and out of her anus. I called Gulf Coast Specialists and they said they would take her in; so our member picked her up and took her straight to them. She was in so much pain they could not do anything until they anesthetized her. They said that we will take this one step at a time and did warn us that if she is infested internally with maggots she may not make it. So, here I sit...worried sick. Please pray for her...we named her Lily Rose. I will update as I hear from them. Hopefully it will be soon. I keep trying to follow my advice to relax and trust that no news is good news...it is certainly easier to say than to do. Some pics of her....I am not posting the really horrible ones because they are beyond disgusting, but you can get a general idea.... shelter1.jpg gcvs1.jpg IMAG1053-(2)web.jpg IMAG1064web.jpg

| Oh my goodness...She looks so sad. I can't imagine what the other pics look like because the ones you posted brought tears to my eyes. I pray that this precious girl Lily Rose will be fine. No dog deserves that. I would be worried sick too and I don't know how you do it. Just think positive!

| Lily rose My heart bleeds for this poor little mite, and it must be so hard and painful for you to know she is so injured and sick. Thank God you got her into the clinic and that she is being cared for in the best way. Not only was this poor baby attacked by the dog, but also had been shamefully neglected for some time to get in that condition. How can people do this to an innocent defenseless creature. How sweet and sad she looks. :-( Praying that the hospital can treat her and make her better, but it does not look an easy task with so many issues. You are doing all you can for her, that is all you can do. Hoping for positive news. Hang in there! |

| When I see cases like this I am thankful that I don't know where they come from.

| Thanks everyone! I just spoke with the vet. Lily Rose is resting comfortably .. they have her on pain meds and antibiotics. They cleansed all of her wounds and got the maggots off her skin .. they then medicated her to kill any maggots left inside of her. They said that the xray looked ok and that there are no injuries in the abdominal cavity that they can see. There are some abnormal labs which don't sound related to the injuries. She has elevated liver enzymes, elevated bilirubin and low platelet count. Those will be repeated tomorrow. She is stable at this point. They will be doing a test to rule out tick borne illness. Other than that, there are no further plans. Tomorrow will be another day.....at least she is clean and pain free for the night.

Oh thank goodness! I am so glad she is pain free and being treated. I pray nothing else major is going on with her. She has been through enough! At least she can rest peacefully tonight knowing she is safe! Thanks for the update!

| So hard to understand how anyone can neglect such a sweet girl. She is lucky to hopefully have her happy ending though! Best wishes to both of you! |

| In humans that have infected/dying tissue around open sores or wounds, maggots are usually credited with keeping the infection and toxins released by the dying tissue under control, and actually in some really horrific cases, they are what keeps the poor patient alive. I have even actually had a couple of patients that had been horribly abused and neglected by family members, and they had bedsores that were all over their bodies where they had been in contact with the floor or mattress for months without being repositioned....and the maggots that were all over the bedsores were what had kept those poor old people alive! The maggots were credited with keeping all the sores clean and the tissue beefy red so we could take over and get the sores healed. Between using maggots to keep ulcerated infected sores clean, and leeches placed on grafted areas to increase blood cirrulation, I almost didnt make it through the shifts!
