| 6 month old yorkie, continous drooling from mouth? Hi guys, My poor puppy is currently facing some issues, in the last 3-4 days we've noticed him becoming very slugish and lazy. His mouth is drooling consistently, and its not just normal drooling but its a lot and its soaking the bottom of his chin/hair. He is eating fine, drinking fine, and his poop is solid and normal. However hes lost all his energy and only wants to sleep. I took him to the vet today and the vet said his symptoms show that it could be a possible liver shunt? I've read a few other threads on this. Can anyone please give me some advice? Thank You! |

| ladyjane: The vet did mention he would like to do a blood test and a Biolastic(not sure)? test on him. However its November 11th and its a holiday and the Labs are closed. I will most likely bring him back in on Monday if he doesn't get any better. My lil friend: I REALLY hope and pray its just teething, however I'm not sure if his slughish and tiredness behavior comes from teething. Still looking for symptoms of a liver shunt. |

| Thanks Ladyjane. Went to the Vet again today and he did a blood test, Will get results in 24-48 hours. Apparently he recommended that I do an ultrasound instead of a bile acid test because he said that way he could physically see everything and not just know there is an issue. Waiting for results now.......... *fingers crossed* |

One of the best links for LS info: Portosystemic Shunts FAQ Now may be a good time to go to a specialist and go from there. See if your vet can recommend one in your area or nearby.

| Please have the ultrasound done. It is best to give the vet all of the info he needs to make an accurate diagnosis. Problems are so much easier to treat when you know exactly what you are dealing with. I would not stop going forward w treatment and diagnosis bc he is doing some better on the new diet.

| Your pup needs further testing as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more chance your puppy could crash from a diseased liver. This is a very serious issue that needs medical attention (an internal medicine specialist). Different vets have different protocols about what tests to do in what order. The bile acids test will show how well the liver is functioning. The ultrasound is a way to see problems in the abdomen. Sometimes shunts can be seen on ultrasound and sometimes they can't be. So a perfect ultrasound doesn't not mean there isn't a liver problem. Perfect bile acids mean there is almost certainly a not a liver shunt present. That said, the vet may want to move right ahead into diagnostics because the symptoms your pup is presenting with do strongly indicate that the liver is not functioning very well. This is supported by the fact that the L/D is helping so much. It's time for a specialist.
