| Elsy's sick Elsy is alittle over 2 yrs and weighs 3.8lbs. She would not eat anything this morning and was just lying around. This afternoon she had dry heaves and bloody diarrhea. I took her to the vet and he did lab work and said her amalyse was just alittle elevated but all the other labs were fine. She didn't have any abdominal tenderness, no temp and he thought she was well hydrated and didn't need any IV fluids at this point. He thought she could have early pancreatitis. He gave me Flagyl to give her and told me to be sure she drinks and that I could try alittle AD canned food. She did eat it when we got home about 6:30 and did fine but at about 10:00 had another bloody stool. One of my other yorkies had this along time ago and had to stay at the vet (she had an acute case) and I seem to remember that they did not give her any food for 24 hrs to let the GI tract rest. I'm wondering if I need to hold off on the food or is there something better that I can be giving her until she feels better. She has not had any vomiting or any more dry heaves. |

| Sorry for the late reply, I just saw your thread tonight... There are varying degrees of pancreatitis, and they each have their own course of treatment. I would just watch her for continuing or worsening symptoms and follow what your vet has told you. Changing their diet can also cause issues, so maybe ask your vet if a bland diet of chicken and rice would be okay, or ask what else he/she would recommend.

| Elsy is fine now. Her stools are normal and she's eating with no problems. I had another little one a long time ago that had a severe pancreatitis. She was really sick and it took her awhile to recover. These tiny ones can get sick so fast, but Elsy was caught and treated early. I had a large rescue dog here for a few days and my husband gave Elsy that dogs food by mistake one time. I'm just wondering if that's what did it. My yorkies are on natural balance dry food and treats so they are not use to any other food. |

| Glad to hear Elsy is doing better! Yes, a dietary change does affect these pups. That probably is what happened. Kudos to you for taking your pup to the vet at the first signs of a problem. Often people wait too long and the recovery is longer.
