| Histiocytoma! :( So i wanted to share my new problem. Last week, I felt a little bump in Bella's paw and I looked at it and it looks really puffy red bump. I took her to the vet and she told me that it is a histiocytoma, a benign tumor. They want to remove it but my problem is the cost.. They are talking about more than $500, with the insurance that i will have to pay for a year... im very sorry for all those persons who wont agree with me.. but i dont have that much money to spend on my dog. I LOVE HER! buy i have other bills and things to cover. If i had extra money, i would! Im 22 years old college student with college loans and i have many things to pay. The only good thing is that i have been researching about histiocystoma and they mostly regresse after 2 to 3 months. SO i made the decision of waiting for 3 months and save some money; that way, if the tumor does not regress then ill make them remove it. Have you ever had this problem?????? What do you think??? And for all of those who are interested in histiocystoma this is some information, that i found online.. Most commonly histiocytomas are found in young dogs and appear as a small, solitary, hairless lump,[6] although Shar Peis may be predisposed to multiple histiocytomas.[7] They are most commonly found on the head, neck, ears, and limbs, and are usually less than 2.5 cm in diameter.[8] Ulceration of the mass is common. Most histiocytomas will regress within two or three months.[6] Surgical removal may be necessary if the tumor does not regress or if it is growing rapidly to a large size. Histiocytomas can also be treated with an intralesional injection of a corticosteroid, but this is not always successful. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Just wondering why you wouldn't opt for the corticosteroid treatments in the meantime. They aren't that expensive, and if it can mean avoiding surgery down the road it would be worth the time and minimal expense. JMO- but I just can't imagine tossing a coin on whether or not something would go away on it's own. Waiting and ignoring it could lead to ulceration, pain and infection. And that will cost a lot more than $500 in the end.

also did your vet aspirate the lump to check what kind of cells were in it or did he just assume it was a histiocytoma? First i'd want to be dead sure what kind of lump it is. Second i'd want to know what the options are for treatment. If surgery is not done right away what can happen? is there a chance it will grow bigger, instead of grow smaller? If leaving it there will cause it to become something else that is cancerous? Is there anything you can put on it to shrink it before deciding on surgery? I understand your college and money situation, but sometimes unexpected problems come up and you need to spend the money to take care of your Dog. See if you can borrow money from family, apply for care credit, apply for a regular low interest credit card, see if you can make payments to your vet, tap into your emergency savings account... personally i'd do anything to find money to help pay for something my dog needs if i didn't have it on hand. When i first got my yorkie i started a savings account just for her in case an emergency came up or if she needed an expensive procedure done. This way i will always have money set aside just for her. I used to have VPI insurance too but it was a waste of my money and didn't cover the medical problems she has, so i canceled it. the money that used to make the monthly payments now goes into her savings account as well.
