| back to her anorexic self while tapering prednisone :( i was so happy for the past month because she was begging for food and eating so good, while she was on prednisone for her IBD. now that her prednisone is being tapered to every other day; she won't eat on the day she doesnt get it and i am very concerned. i get anxious because she might be getting sick again; or it could be another issue or she can just be just anorexic. either way not wanting to eat makes me very nervous and worried. i am not sure what to do. the vet said to keep her on every other day and wait until she vomits few times before calling him. but do i really want to wait until it gets this bad again. i really need some advice. anyone had this problem with the appetite? thanks

| Really?! can dogs be anorexic or did you use that word to emphasize? Sorry if it's a dumb question.

| Hi I have a dog who just started Pred on Sat and she seemed to have lost a few pounds because she was so sick last weekend. Did your dog eventually gain weight on the Pred? I've been weighing my dog everyday at the same time just to monitor, maybe an idea? Maybe the Pred was making her feel good and she's not used to not getting it ... |

| she did gain about 1/2 lb in a month because she wanted food all the time; but now that the pred is being tapered to every other day, her appetite is not as great anymore; today she didnt want to eat lunch; but she wanted dinner, so i felt a bit better. but still i am concerned that as the dosage gets lower and lower she will not eat at all. so i wanted to see if anyone has similar experience. thanks

| My dog has not been on pred but has been sick and just came home tonight after having to stay at the vet the last two nights. They gave him IV's of med an to get him hydarated again. I brought him home of a low residue diet in which they said he at some for them. I thought maybe so but when I tried to feed it to him he just kind of stuck his nose up to it. Great back to where we were before. I'm just not sure what to do with him I still don't think he acts quit right yet. I will give it a couple days and see what happens. |

| Hi, This may or may not be relevant. I am trying to wean myself off of Prednisone, due to Lupus. I feel terrible, dizzy, nauseous, pain all over. It's like a really terrible flu. If the puppies are having even similar symptoms, it's no wonder they are not up to snuff, plus the prednisone affects (increases) appetite and slows metabolism in humans. I don't know if canines are affected like we are but it could account for the symtoms you are dealing with. I would definetly do some research on the drugs affects on dogs, and the affects of withdrawing the drug. |

| I agree.....Ava might be a bit uncomfortable coming off of the prednisone. Also, prednisone does increase appetite. The fact she did eat her later meal is a good sign. It is not good to stay on the prednisone forever, and I think you may just have to trust your vet on this one. Maybe ask him about Mirtazapine for a short time while she is going through this. That medicine is unbelievable! I used it for a renal failure dog...and am not sure if it would be contraindicated with the prednisone, but worth asking about it.

| No, not a dumb question. Yes, dogs can be anorexic, which makes it very hard to put and/or keep any weight on them. They always look a bit too skinny. Anorexia can be a symptom of many diseases, not just a poor appetite.

| yesterday and today she ate fine; at first she hesitated but then she ate it up. she's eating about 1/2 can a day; spread out three times daily. yes i am using bene-bac probiotic gel the vet gave me. linda thanks for the advice; i will ask about Mirtazapine after we stop prednisone and if she stops eating. i know it's antidepressant and can increase appetite. we will wait and see. thanks all for the advice.

i dont think she's anorexic because she's not skinny. but when she refuses to eat, usually because she's sick, it's almost like being anorexic because she completely stops eating. but after her last treatment with predsnisone she has been fine. that's why when she refuses to eat i panic as it is a sign of her getting sick.

| Back in December Buster was diagnosed as anorexic by a vet at Texas A&M University. He weighs 4 lbs. but he looks like he should weigh more. I can feel every bone in his body, very well. He is very skinny. He has days where he will eat, then it seems like he can go for days without eating.
