Donating YT 3000 Club Member | close to the standard? im always hearing how yorkies should be as close to the standard as possible im just wondering how many here actually come close to it read the standard if you havent General Appearance That of a long-haired toy terrier whose blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of body. The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self-importance. Head Small and rather flat on top, the skull not too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long, with the bite neither undershot nor overshot and teeth sound. Either scissors bite or level bite is acceptable. The nose is black. Eyes are medium in size and not too prominent; dark in color and sparkling with a sharp, intelligent expression. Eye rims are dark. Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart. Body Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump. Legs and Feet Forelegs should be straight, elbows neither in nor out. Hind legs straight when viewed from behind, but stifles are moderately bent when viewed from the sides. Feet are round with black toenails. Dewclaws, if any, are generally removed from the hind legs. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be removed. Tail Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back. Coat Quality, texture and quantity of coat are of prime importance. Hair is glossy, fine and silky in texture. Coat on the body is moderately long and perfectly straight (not wavy). It may be trimmed to floor length to give ease of movement and a neater appearance, if desired. The fall on the head is long, tied with one bow in center of head or parted in the middle and tied with two bows. Hair on muzzle is very long. Hair should be trimmed short on tips of ears and may be trimmed on feet to give them a neat appearance. Colors Puppies are born black and tan and are normally darker in body color, showing an intermingling of black hair in the tan until they are matured. Color of hair on body and richness of tan on head and legs are of prime importance in adult dogs, to which the following color requirements apply: Blue: Is a dark steel-blue, not a silver-blue and not mingled with fawn, bronzy or black hairs. Tan: All tan hair is darker at the roots than in the middle, shading to still lighter tan at the tips. There should be no sooty or black hair intermingled with any of the tan. Color on Body The blue extends over the body from back of neck to root of tail. Hair on tail is a darker blue, especially at end of tail. Headfall A rich golden tan, deeper in color at sides of head, at ear roots and on the muzzle, with ears a deep rich tan. Tan color should not extend down on back of neck. Chest and Legs A bright, rich tan, not extending above the elbow on the forelegs nor above the stifle on the hind legs. Weight Must not exceed seven pounds. | Not sure how to answer the poll but both of mine are within all the standards so far (my girl is not done growing yet) but as puppies, not adults. The face hair has not completed changed on both. If there are any faults so far.... I would say Ben's ears are a little big (I like them that way but they are really a little large -- he has grown into them a little better than my avatar pic though!). They both also still have their black color and have not "gone blue" yet. Ben seems to be getting a blue sheen when the sunlight hits so I am hopeful. He does have a silky coat. I am told Sadie's will be too but she still has puppy hair. Either of them could still go out-of-standard but I think they are pretty close. I have thought about showing them in puppy class but so far I have made no progress with the leash. I had a Yorkie that went over on weight and had a wavy, soft coat. We spayed her and loved her. Miss her still. But I was a lot more careful when I picked these two out. I love the look epitomized by the Yorkie standard -- and that is what I hope for both of mine.

| I think mine is pretty close to the standard - but he's still got a ways to go, so that could change. I keep him in a puppy cut also, which is my preference, so I could never show him.

I Love Thor Donating Member | If Thor was smaller and hadn't had a problem with his front tooth (ie, he's missing it!) he may be closer to 'the standard'! |

| Dougal's about as far away from the standard as I've managed to find in any yorkie so far (but he's the one with the official papers). The only part of the standard Dougal meets is: The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self-importance. He's a whopping 13.2lbs (and that's not fat). He's got a woolly coat. His ears go more sideways than straight up, he has lots of blue / grey on his head. His body hair is black with a few stray grey hairs. He's got little spare ribs that have grown the wrong way which results in little lumps on his rib cage. But do you know what? I don't care. He's an AWESOME agility dog! and I love him soooo much!

| I think mine are standard or pretty close to it. I have read this before and it seems to match mine. |

| Jaden is a standard AKC yorkie in his appearance. Before I got him he was meant to be a show dog and when his coat was fully grown out the only flaw show judges could find with him was his tempermant. Everything else was correct. He's a bit on the shy side which doesn't work well for a show dog and though he could preform all the tasks and tricks needed for show he hated doing it and hated being in front of the crowds so that is why he is not a show dog. I had him in a puppy cut earlier but am growing his coat back out again. My other little girl is also within the standard. She's still a puppy though but from her history and everything I can tell she will also be the correct colors, hair texture, size and tempermant as well. |

| Shelby & Seymour are a bit over the standard weight.... a bit on the chubby side. Hopefully with a little more exercise and watching the treat intake will resolve this issue! (they could be within standard if they didn't have round bellies!!) My Little teapots really have a pretty color and coats that I admire. Although the work keeping them that way can be very time consuming ( .... Who am I kidding..this is YORKIE talk... I guess you ALL know that already! ) Happy Weekend! 100_1065.jpg

| layla is standard weight and color... and it's funny cause from day one she has had a great stance. her back feet always slant back like you see on tv. however, i'm not sure if teeth are an issue, but layla's teeth are not very straight.. and she had a cottony coat. |

| Somewhere on the health forum I asked other YT owners about whether they had dogs with "spare ribs" and there were a few.
