Question Vicious Dogs

This isn't meant to start a controversy--I just thought it would be interesting to get everyone's opinions on so-called "vicious" dog breeds i.e. pit bulls, presa canarios, rottweilers etc...
We've all read the stories and seen the news of someone being mauled or killed by one of the notorious breeds.
I am a firm believer in giving every dog a chance regardless of breed, but I have to admit I would be nervous to run into certain types of dogs if I were alone.
I've had friends and relatives who've had these breeds, and they swore their dogs were wonderful. I honestly believe there are great dogs in every breed, and a lot of it comes down to training, but how does everyone else feel. Please give your honest opinion!
Are pit bulls, presas, rotts, getting a bad wrap?

my honest opinion on this is it's not the dog it's the owner. i mean i don't know too much about these breeds but i don't believe that dogs are born mean. to me it's the ignorant owners who make them that way

When you think about it, all dogs will bite. Owners say they won't, but it's only a matter of time. If our little Yorkies had a great deal of weight to their frame, they would be considered vicious too.

I have been raised with and have raised my children with rotties. Rotties are WONDERFUL dogs. I also have a really close friend who has a pit bull that is a therapy dog.

So IMO it is not the dog it is the handler/owner.

I also agree that there is good in every breed. I know
there is no way this probably could ever happen but
I wish that there was a way to monitor the people
who are buying dogs that are classified as more likely
to be a problem. If they were in healthy homes with
caring people I think the problems wouldn't be far less.
But again that's JMO. Handing these sort of dogs over
to people that have had a violent history just doesn't
seem real logical.

In my experience small dogs are far more vicious than large ones - the difference is large ones can kill Anyone who keeps a dog be it small or large has a duty to keep people and other animals safe from harm and that means knowing what your dog is capable of and being able to stop it harming anyone if necessary. All dogs are capable if pushed far enough of biting it just takes more pushing to get some to react.

I love them. pit bulls are so sweet and so are rotties. but they have the instincts to be agressive. and when anyone says that, they don't realize that its the same with every breed. pit bulls can look aggressive and their owners can train them to be aggressive. the only difference between them and small dogs is that they can do a lot more damage. every single breed has the instincts to be aggressive. some yorkies can even be aggressive. with any dog anyone gets, it is up to the owner to train them from the time they get them that biting and acting like that is not acceptable. thats the way i think of it anyway.

My brother has two pitbulls and they are the sweetest dogs in the world. He doesn't want them to be mean dogs and they're not. Puppies aren't born mean, they're too innocent. They don't know anything at first. In my opinion you have to teach a dog to be vicious, they're not born that way.

I agree with all of those who said it's not the dog but the owner. That said, I'm for strict control of both. If the owner is responsible, "strict control" is not an issue. Their dog will always be penned or leashed. I've seen too many maulings, and it's always by rotties or pitbulls. When it comes to dogs attacking humans, there should be zero tolerance. We just had an incident in Anchorage where a loose rottie and pitbull attacked and almost killed a moose. A state biologist came by, and after several attempts to chase the dogs away, he killed the dogs. The owner was reportedly furious, but I totally agreed. These dogs were out of control and needed to be stopped immediately.

I 110% agree that its the owners not the dogs. As dog owners you have to be ready to socialize and train your dogs. Thats one of the biggest reasons dos become aggressive. If owners keep them tied up in the back yard with out any socialization or training or just basic attention then you have a dog that is not going to trust. I have a shepherd that is the sweetest thing but we also play with him everyday, give him treats and train with him. i used to live next door to a family that kept thier retriever tied to his dog house and not ever did i se them take the dog in or for walks or even play with him. The poor thing died one summer when it was really hot outside. i couldnt believe it when they went ahead and purchased another dog. I dont know its such a sensitive subject i have never been in a situation with an aggressive dog so i dont know what that feels like. i guess its like humans its how we are raised that makes us the people we are.
