| Peeved at my local humane society I called my local shelter yesterday to inquire about volunteering and they were rude. We are new to the area and sometimes I think it's just the area we are in. Very small town filled with people that have all been here thier whole lives...and then there is us. Military and I think we just don't belong. Who knows, all I know is I wanted to help out and they were rude from the time they said hello. When she answered the phone I said hi, I was trying to find out how to volunteer. She said we have the inmates working. So I said you don't take any outside volunteers? After a moment of silence she says with a huff who wants to volunteer...I was so done with her And we wonder why we can't get people to help and we have to put down so many animals. I was so excited when we moved here and found out that the shelter was right around the corner from us and that they were a no kill shelter and now it looks like we can't even help out there. I so would love to help out, volunteer and/or foster but they make it so difficult...I really can't understand. I thought they wanted to help the animals not turn away people who want to help... I am so angry Kim

| Maybe it would help to go talk to someone in person. Maybe they'll be more conversational. If they're still rude, I'd let them know that them acting that way is unacceptable...

| I can understand your frustration. I put in two applications at our shelter and never received a call back, however they have flyers all over saying they need help. How nuts is that?

| My local humane society is the same way.. Up until eigth grade they havee a program that basically YOU pay THEM to work there for 'camp' but they wont let anyone under 16 volunteer. They are filled to capacity and they are so picky about who volunteers and such yet they turn away good volunteers and good homes

| I thought about volunteering at our shelter but I'm not so sure about the workers there. They are kinda scary. LOL

| That is sad. There is no excuse for them acting that way in my opinion. You have a good heart and I hope you can visit them in person and get better treatment.

| Most shelters have a board that oversees things. I would let them know. I bet they won't like someone running off volunteers.

| Sorry for your bad experience. Unfortunately the shelter in my town is like that too. I've gone a few times to walk dogs and help and they either ignore me while I'm there or shoot me ugly looks. The staff there really hates being there and can't imagine why anyone would come do it for free. I miss the shelter in my old town. they had inmates to clean the cages and stuff but loved when volunteers came to walk the dogs or snuggle the puppies. Are there any rescues in your town? Maybe you could call them and volunteer? I know our local rescue loves to have volunteers to help out at adoption days.
