| Interior design ideas for pet owners When fur flies, be prepared TheStar.com - living - When fur flies, be prepared June 30, 2007 DesignerGuys Pets are amazing in so many ways. They're always happy to see you and they never mind keeping you company during the ball game. But from a design perspective, pets have as many issues as they do benefits: the constant cleaning, the hair, the stains, the destroyed furniture, etc. You'd think designers would want to avoid the whole issue. But interior design choices (or lack thereof) are affected by pets. So when you've seen too many spaces where the animals have taken over, the issue cannot be ignored. There are more options than ever before for maintaining style in a pet-friendly home. New materials allow for less fur and fewer stains. And we do speak from experience – Allen is a dog owner and Matt grew up on a farm. So, we're challenging to the pet owners of Toronto: Take back your space! And here are a few tips on how to do it: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Floors When considering flooring, hardwood is perfect for most animals but larger dogs can scratch the finish. In that case, opt for a sturdier laminate. Ceramic tile, slate and stone are a big plus for pets that suffer from the heat, as the floor will stay cool all day. Put out some throw rugs that allow for traction. Durable rugs with detailed patterns, like Persians, will also hide dirt and stains. If fur is the issue, seagrass mats are a great flooring option. They do not pick up pet hair as easily, and they can also repel moisture – giving you the time to act in case of "accidents." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Furniture Patterns will also hide dirt and stains on furniture. However, if you have a more modern space, consider microfibre. It looks and feels like suede and is resistant to stains and discoloration. Plus, it is machine-washable and cleans up quickly with a lint brush. If you own expensive or delicate furniture you cannot live without, cover it with a slipcover. Most large furniture chains carry inexpensive slipcovers in a multitude of colours, materials and styles that can be easily removed for company or for washing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Valuables Cats (and Allen's toy poodle-Yorkshire terrier cross Winston) will climb on any surface they can get to; therefore, keep your breakables and valuables up high. (This is also a good tip for those with enthusiastic dogs.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows Sheer, short curtains or simple shades will not collect dust and pet hair like long, heavy curtains and they will not tempt kitty to climb them, either. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plants Cats also love to eat and dig up plants, so spray them with natural cat repellents and cover the dirt with stones or gravel. Cat grass will give your cat an alternative snack that's better for its belly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- cool ideas The Cat's Den (thecatsden.net) creates custom outdoor enclosures, letting your house cat experience the outdoors without the danger of being lost or harmed. If your animal is the wandering type, the Power Pet Automatic Pet Door (hitecpet.com) and the Staywell Infra-red Pet Door (petronic.com) are perfect for allowing your pet in-and-out privileges without opening your door to hungry raccoons. The cute and chic steps at Prettie Yiji (prettieyiji.com) allow smaller pets to climb on the bed or couch without damage to their joints. The Doggie Dooley (unique distributors.com) is a septic toilet system for dogs – an option for older dogs with arthritis and other joint problems or for those that live in high-rises. If you love the sound of running water and want to make sure your pets have a steady, fresh supply, the Drinkwell Fresh Water Fountain (available at PetSmart, petsmart.com) could be incorporated as a water feature with some camouflage. For fish or lizards, Miracles Aquariums (miracles aquariums.com) in Mississauga creates custom aquariums and terrariums. Terrariums also allow you to have a sustainable ecosystem of your own – something people are more interested in these days. And remember: the happier the owner, the happier the pet, so do not forget your own needs while attending to your furry (or feathered or scaled) friends! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Designer Guys can be seen Tuesdays at 10:30p.m. on HGTV.
