Why isn't there sealbelts on school buses? It has always been something that has bothered me. With the sealt belt laws we have you would think that it would be mandatory.

I've always wondered that too!!! They make such a big deal of wearing them. "click it or ticket". I wonder when you hear about the bad bus accidents, how many of those injuries and deaths wouldn't have occurred if they had seatbelts on.

They were talking about this on the radio this morning. A bus driver called in and said it isn't a really big problem not having them. She said there is alot more auto accidents than buses...Well duh, there is like 1 million more cars on the road!

OMG YES! I have thought of that. You know when I was younger I took the "cheese bus" and I don't really remember there being seatbelts. But there should be because it's kids! Especially on school buses because any little bump on the ground makes you fly in the air, i swear! I used to sit in the back and I would almost hit my head on the roof of the bus anytime we went over a bump. And then I always see those videos on the news of kids flying everywhere when something in the bus happens.

Hubby and I were just talking about this the other day and I believe he said they might start doing that here in Ontario?? It doesnt make sense not to have them..

They had seat belts in the cheese buses that I rode to school in and the boys used to hit each other with it so they tucked it in between the seat and the back rest but maybe that's why they removed it?

YES! I've said many times to dh that I'm shocked at the chances we take with our most valuable asset: our future! How, oh HOW can we send children to school on vehicles where they are not secure!?

Well, my town is really small, so we dont use school busses. But whenever we do, for a class trip or whatever, there's usually seat belts. I can only think of one occasion where there weren't seat belts (the teachers were majorly paranoid the whole ride lol). I do think it's VERY odd that busses don't have seat belts, espeically because it's kids.

I've asked the same thing. It's the law that they must wear them in the car but throw fifty of them together in a big steel can and don't worry about it? It doesn't make sense.
The buses here do have seat belts but they don't make the kids wear them so none of them do.

My nephew's bus was involved in an accident years ago. It wasn't too bad but the kids were tossed around and a few ended up in the hospital.

no seatbelts on trains too. imo it's very dangerous. to save money they put our safety at risk.

Since I'm a school bus driver, thought I'd put my two-cents worth in. Here in Indiana officials are considering putting in seat belts. They are looking at past accidents and trying to learn and see what is best.

For the most part, buses are really safe. Most accidents are minor in general. The frame, bumpers and wheel base sits high enough that unless hit by a semi or heavy duty truck, the kids may get josled, but will remain relatively safe...meaning not really life threatening.

If by the horrible chance it is a serious accident, it would be really hard to get all those kids (I have anywhere from 55 to 69, depending on the day) out of individual seat belts, hopefully none jamming from the pressure.

The other day on the news a school bus hit a wet slick spot and crossed the median and broke through the guard rail. The front wheels did not make it through the guardrail. If that bus would have continued through the guard rail, it probably would have ended up on it's side going down the hill. If seat belts were used, it would have been terribly hard to get them all out and lots of injuries just from the belts would have most likely happened, heaven forbid the chance of a fire. If there were no seat belts and it went on it's side probably more serious injuries would occur, but death is still not likely, though possible. More bus deaths occur outside the bus during loading and unloading than at any other time.

Can you tell we just had a safety meeting recently?

I will be satified with whatever they choose to do.
