| Q for Bird Owners - RE Laying Eggs I know there are few bird enthusiasts on here, so I'm hoping you can help me out. I have a 5 yo female Cockateil, who like any female bird, lays eggs on occasion. In the past week, she has laid 2 eggs, nothing out of the norm except for the eggs themselves. They are very mishapen...long and thin, and lopsided (for lack of better term). She has a calcium stone and gets vit drops in her water, just as she always has. What is the deal? Is this normal, something I should worry about? TIA for any insight. |

| My JuJu, who, I'm sorry to say, passed away last month, used to lay anywhere from 5 to 11 eggs at a time. Every once in awhile there would be one that was oddly shaped(longer than usual) or even one that was so thin it would break when I candled it. I have a male and always hoped he'd figure out what he was supposed to do, but he's gender challenged and loves himself far more than any female bird so we never had any baby birds. I have no clue what causes it and I sure hope your little feathered buddy is ok.

| Thin egg shells are observed when calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D3 are not provided in diets at adequate levels. Is she eating the calcium stone? Does she have enough sunlight to process vitamin D3 in her system? |

| Yes, she LOVES her Calci-stone! I'm sure she's getting enough of that. She laid another egg last night, and it seemed normal. Who knows!? She doesn't seem to be showing any other signs of anything being wrong...plumage is still good and no signs of stress. Just the routine alternating being overly loving and thoroughly ticked off as she normally does when it's "egg time." |
