| For those near Ft. Dodge, Iowa I just read that on Tuesday Feb. 24 a town meeting will be held at 7 p.m. about the plight of puppy mills in Iowa and trying to stop them. The meeting will be in Fort Dodge at Citizens Central, 617 Central Ave. I'm too far from there, but I wanted to put the info out there, in case someone else wanted to take part. Here is where I read it Iowa ranks third in U.S. puppy mill stats - MessengerNews.net | News, Sports, Jobs, Community Info. - Messenger News

| thank you for posting this. The meeting location is Citizen's Community Credit Union at 6th and Central avenue in downtown Ft. Dodge. Ft. Dodge is located in North Central Iowa. About 45 minutes NW of Ames, 90 minutes north of Des Moines. IOWA PEOPLE - IF YOU CAN - PLEASE ATTEND! I am down in SWIA - about 2.5 hours away = I will see what I can do about making it. We just moved down here 3 years ago from that area so I am very familiar with it. Perhaps we need to post this link in the "IOWA YORKIES" Social Group? Your thoughts?

| I do not know that gal. She is from Newell - that is a small community closer to Storm Lake in Buena Vista County. Is there any way a Mod or Admin can send a PM to all people with "IA" in their State or Location? Just to give a courtesy shout-out to this thread? Or can we search for Location and send one out? I know there are members in that area, Mason City (not far), and all around.......

| hmm = I don't know if admin would do that, I suggested to admin a mth or so ago that we have a forum set aside where people could post info like this so it doesn't get lost or buried. I know you can look by zip code for members and then maybe send them a pm. I've done that for meetups - but I'll have to check if I have the names copied with the zip codes

| wondering if anyone went to this tonight? Looks like this gal is from Des Moines. I would like to find some contact information for her and see about joining in. Here's a follow-up story Wants puppy mill laws changed - MessengerNews.net | News, Sports, Jobs, Community Info. - Messenger News Wants puppy mill laws changed DM woman traveling state to educate public By EMILIE NELSON, Messenger staff writer POSTED: February 25, 2009 Mary LaHay didn't know much about puppy mills until she and her husband decided to get a dog just over a year ago. Now, the Des Moines woman is actively working to convince the Iowa Legislature to change laws regarding puppy mill operations in the state. "We wanted to get a golden doodle puppy," LaHay said at a public meeting at Citizens Central Tuesday evening. "We went to visit with a breeder, and the conditions seemed so bad in his facility that we just couldn't do it." Following her visit with the breeder, LaHay learned more about puppy mills, and she knew she wanted to do something about them. "I heard about a breeders' sale being held at the state fairgrounds, and knowing many of the breeders there may have been classified as puppy mills, I e-mailed every humane society and rescue I knew of to have them contact their legislators," she said. "The next day I was overwhelmed with e-mails, and that's when I knew we'd started something." LaHay has been traveling around the state with Eddie, her 5-year-old miniature poodle who was rescued from a puppy mill, to educate the public on the effects of puppy mills and what is being done in Iowa to help control them. LaHay told those in attendance that most puppy mill breeding is done under harsh conditions, in small cages with very little food or water. "These dogs are stressed, emaciated and underfed," she said. "They're often kept in small, wire cages that barely comply with the Animal Welfare Act." LaHay said the Animal Welfare Act only requires that a dog in a cage have 6 inches of space above it and around it to move about in. She also added that many people are misled about puppy mills. "Puppy mills are breeding facilities that are licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture," said LaHay. "The title 'USDA licensed' can be deceptive, it's not always a good thing." Currently, in Iowa, only USDA inspectors are allowed to check up on breeding facilities. LaHay is making it her mission to change that law, which is part of Iowa Code 162, to allow state inspectors to check breeding facilities upon receipt of a complaint. The proposal, known as House File 30, or the "Puppy Mill Bill," passed in the House of Representatives Tuesday. "It will move into the Senate now," said LaHay. "There are still a lot of steps to get through before it will ever become a law, but it is a big step in the right direction." Contact Emilie Nelson at 573-2141 or enelson@messengernews.net

| Many of you have seen this post so I wanted to do an update for you. This is for everyone but the goal is, at this time, a regional focus around Iowa as there is a prevelance of millers (Missouri, Oklahoma and Iowa) so I encourage you if you are from the Midwest - please read!!!! I spoke with Mary LaHay today for about an hour. Mary is working so hard to educate communities in Iowa about millers, byb's and the outcome of their business (the animals AND the stores like Petland). I know she needs help but not necessarily financial help - she needs your voice, your passion and some of your time. She WANTS public meetings filled with people to educate them on what is going on. She is seeing that people are STEPPING UP and helping. Many of them do not know this is going on and once they are informed, they jump in to donate their time, money, food, blankets, etc. to support their own communities. The stories she told me broke my heart but also angered me so badly. I told her about these forums online that have extremely passionate individuals that are AGAINST millers and byb's. These people use their voice. They have the passion needed as they understand the love of their furbs and cannot even fathom how people can treat dogs the way they do. I invited her to this forum to talk, to ask questions, to gain more information from reputable breeders. I want to encourage you that when she arrives (and I will try to post a LOUD THREAD), please talk to her. Tell her your experiences. Let her share hers so all of us understand even more the process to get laws changed in states. I would be honored to be a part of her organization to educate/teach people in rural communities the reality of what is happening in their OWN BACKYARD and how to stop it. I am sending her more information tomorrow on these sites AND on some potential grants to apply for to assist in getting shelters set up or to provide technical assistance to people in communities to set up safe shelters for dogs. To educate them on the importance of altering their animals. Please, send me a PM and let me know if you are interested in her contacting you also to be a part of this. I feel I can be a very good source in SW IA, NW MO and Western Nebraska. We need people in N, N central, NE, Central, Se and southern Iowa to assist her - it may be just getting her names of people to contact. It may be to assist her in stuffing envelopes or sending out emails to petition to stop these millers and byb's. I want to thank you, in advance, for your generosity. I know that our time is valuable. Mine is too but I look in the eyes of my babies and know that I have time in my life to assist more so they have just as good of a life as mine do. Theresa

| I am definitely interested in helping her and furthering this cause - central Iowa may not have as many puppy mills - but I imagine a great deal of these Iowa puppy mill dogs are ending up in central Iowa
