| What do you think?? Crate or Playpen? I have a question for you experts. My Bella is 13 weeks old. Right now she is in my sons old playpen which is where I keep her food, bed, wee wee pad and toys. I wanted her to be trained to go inside and outside. SHould I transition her out of her playpen and put her in a crate? I don't want to ruin her by doing the wrong thing. Also, lately she has been shredding her wee wee pad in the playpen. She is pretty good about going on it when she is out, but has some accidents. |

| i just hate putting pupppiies in playpens. When i first got Ceeby as a baby, I bought a playpen. It took him just a few days to gnaw a hole in it and nearly hang himself trying to weasal thru the hole. If I hadn't been home torescue him, he would have dangled all day and died no doubt. I would use the crate if I were you, altho I use neither for my dogs. and as far as shredding the peepads, it's a pupppy thing. |

| I kept Diesel in a playpen for almost a year. I only trained him to go outside. He slept in the playpen at night and i had his food and puppypad in there too. I didn't have a problem training him. I kept taking him outside all the time and he did just fine. Do you live in an apartment? I was just wondering why you wanted him to learn to use the bathroom inside. I am no expert but I would think teaching them to go both inside and out would really confuse them. I would pick one or the other. Doing both might tell him that he can go anywhere he likes.

| Bella's breeder told me to use a playpen, but she didn't say how long. After reading the response about the danger of it, I am switching her today! The reason why I am trying to get her to go on the wee wee pad is because I work all day, and didn't think it would be fair if she were to hold it most of the day inside a crate, and I didn't want her to not have some space. I live in an apartment, but it is a 2 family house, so I can take her out. I just thought it would be easier to get her to go on the wee wee pad first, and move the wee wee pad closer to the door, and eventually outside. I am so confused!! |

| Definetly gate her in a room when you're gone with all her neccessities, and when your home take her out as much as you can. A lot of people here have their babies trained for inside and out for the same reason.

| Diesel never chewed at the netting. He had been in the playpen since we brought him home. When he was a baby he wasn't allowed to run all over the house. If I wasn't playing with him, holding him, or taking him out he was in the playpen. So really that was all he knew and he was ok with it. I don't really think that playpens are dangerous. BUT a lot depends on your dog. Some don't mind being in a pen and some go nuts and start chewing. I know we had a Chi/Yorkie mix and she used the puppypad while she was in the playpen. She also shredded and chewed everything up in it. She destroyed it! That was the most destructive dog I had ever seen. So a lot depends on the dog.. She also ONLY used the pad if it was in the playpen. When she wasn't in the playpen she would pee anywhere she felt like it. She didn't even care that you were watching her like a hawk. A crate will work just as well. I think it is up to you. Both serve the same purpose. Good Luck.

| You could use a large x-pen, she coulden't chew through that. Or you could just puppy proof one room and put a baby gate in the doorway. |

| I can put her in the kitchen and gate it off. Would I still put the pee pee pad, and the crate in there while I am not home? This way she could go into the crate to sleep, and also at night I can crate her and take her outside when I wake up to go potty, right? I also have a really nice bed for her if you guys think I shouldn't bother with the crate. I have to figure it out, but definately the kitchen gated off sounds good. She will have alot of room to roam! Thank you all for your posts!!! I really appreciate it! |

| I used a playpen with wee wee pads(for when I couldn't watch her or at night) and then would take her out during the day. She housebroke so darn fast. It was seriously the fastest of any dog I've owned. Crates are so small and don't offer the option of using a wee wee pad for emergencies. It takes awhile before their bladders can hold it. Plus Lola was small and I wanted her to have food and water at all times and in a playpen she could.
